ICMI 2026 CALL FOR PAPERS ============================================ 5-9 October 2026, Napoli - Italy https://icmi.acm.org/2026/ ============================================ The 28th International Conference on Multimodal Interaction (ICMI 2026) will be held in Napoli, Italy. ICMI is the premier international forum for advancing research at the intersection of multimodal artificial intelligence (AI) and social interaction to create technically innovative, effective, and human-centered multimodal interactive systems. A unique aspect of ICMI is its multidisciplinary nature, bringing together research in AI, multimodal data processing, human-machine, and human-human interaction to bridge behavioral understanding with technology, with an eye towards impactful applications that benefit people and society. Novelty will be evaluated along two dimensions: scientific novelty and technical novelty. Accepted papers at ICMI 2026 must demonstrate novelty in at least one of these two dimensions. The theme of this year's conference is "Context and Cultural Awareness for Multimodal Interaction", to explore how context and cultural factors influence multimodal interaction systems, including their design, implementation, and evaluation. We welcome papers that address the integration of contextual understanding, such as environmental, social, and emotional factors, into multimodal interaction systems. We also encourage contributions that explore cultural considerations in the development and deployment of interactive technologies. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: * Affective computing and interaction * User-adaptive systems * Cognitive modelling and multimodal interaction * Context-aware modelling * Cross-cultural design and evaluation * Gesture, touch, and haptics * Healthcare, assistive technologies * Human communication dynamics * Human-robot/agent multimodal interaction * Human-centred AI and ethics * Interaction with a smart environment * Machine learning for multimodal interaction * Mobile and wearable multimodal systems * Multimodal behaviour generation * Multimodal datasets and validation * Multimodal dialogue modeling * Multimodal fusion and representation * Multimodal interactive applications * Novel multimodal datasets * Spoken/visual behaviours in social interaction * System components and multimodal platforms * Virtual/augmented reality and multimodal interaction Commitment to ethical conduct is mandatory, and submissions must adhere to ethical standards, in particular when human-derived data are employed. Authors are encouraged to consult the ACM Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct (https://ethics.acm.org/). *** Important Dates Abstract deadline April 13, 2026 Paper Submission April 20, 2026 Rebuttal Period June 1, 2026 Paper notification July 6, 2026 Camera-ready paper July 23, 2026 Presenting at the main conference October 6-8, 2026 *** ACM Publication Policies ACM's New Open Access Publishing Model. Starting January 1, 2026, ACM will fully transition to Open Access. All ACM publications, including those from ACM-sponsored conferences, will be 100% Open Access. Authors will have two primary options for publishing Open Access articles with ACM: the ACM Open institutional model or by paying Article Processing Charges (APCs). With over 1,800 institutions already part of ACM Open, the majority of ACM-sponsored conference papers will not require APCs from authors or conferences (currently, around 70-75%). Authors from institutions not participating in ACM Open will need to pay an APC to publish their papers, unless they qualify for a financial or discretionary waiver. To find out whether an APC applies to your article, please consult the list of participating institutions in ACM Open and review the APC Waivers and Discounts Policy. Keep in mind that waivers are rare and are granted based on specific criteria set by ACM. Understanding that this change could present financial challenges, ACM has approved a temporary subsidy for 2026 to ease the transition and allow more time for institutions to join ACM Open. The subsidy will offer: * $250 APC for ACM/SIG members * $350 for non-members This represents a 65% discount, funded directly by ACM. Authors are encouraged to help advocate for their institutions to join ACM Open during this transition period. This temporary subsidized pricing will apply to all conferences scheduled for 2026, including ICMI.

2nd Call for Papers: LREC 2026 Workshop on Learning Non-Literal Expressions with Small Data (NLE 2026)
by Valia Kordoni 28 Jan '26

28 Jan '26

Workshop on Learning Non-Literal Expressions with Small Data (NLE 2026) To be held in conjunction with LREC 2026, Palma de Mallorca, Spain on 11 May 2026. Website: https://sites.google.com/view/nle2026/home Overview Non-Literal Expressions (NLEs) in natural language are a reflection of fundamental cognitive processes such as analogical reasoning and categorisation, and are deeply rooted in everyday communication. NLEs understanding is therefore an essential task for language modeling. This task is especially challenging because it cannot be tackled by falling back on individual word meanings, but requires taking into account larger chunks of surrounding text or even contextual information. At the same time, it is important because the reliable processing of NLEs is relevant for optimizing downstream tasks like translation and summarization. This workshop focuses on understanding of Non-Literal Expressions. While most of the earlier work on NLEs had been devoted to metaphor and metonymy, recent activities target other forms of NLEs as well, e.g., hyperbole (deliberate exaggeration), litotes (understatement), rhetorical questions, and irony. Humanly annotated corpora for NLEs have very recently started becoming available to the research community and may serve as the basis for data-driven approaches to NLEs processing, with the interrelated goals of first identifying and then interpreting such expressions. Such data is mostly of high linguistic quality, but still very limited in size. Thus, the workshop’s focus is on adaptation of Language Models (LMs) and Deep Learning (DL) for processing of Non-Literal Expressions with limited high-quality data, since such constructs still pose big identification and processing challenges in natural language analysis tasks. Topics of Interest We are interested in contributions which focus on the use of techniques like self-training for leveraging unlabelled data, as well as in work that focuses on the incorporation of external linguistic resources and knowledge injection to enrich features, and also in research that describes work on utilisation of multitask learning with the aim to benefit from related tasks. The workshop also wants to discuss alternative approaches which may elaborate on the use of pre-trained Language Models (LMs) as a foundation and the application of techniques like contrastive learning and clustering to identify challenging examples within the data, the ultimate aim of the workshop being to highlight the necessity of high-quality data, as well as cross-lingual datasets. Invited Speakers - Barbara Plank, LMU Munich - Debanjan Ghosh, Princeton, USA Further details and info on the invited talks will be announced shortly. Submission Guidelines Papers must be submitted electronically through Softconf, using the following link: https://softconf.com/lrec2026/NLE2026/ Submissions should: • Be 4–8 pages, excluding references and optional Ethics Statements • Follow the LREC 2026 style guidelines, available on the conference website: https://lrec2026.info/authors-kit/ • Use templates provided here: https://lrec2026.info/calls/second-call-for-papers/ Authors will be asked to supply information on any language resources (broadly defined — data, tools, standards, evaluation sets, etc.) used in or resulting from their work. ELRA strongly encourages sharing such resources to support reproducibility and reuse. Accepted papers will appear in the workshop proceedings. Presentation format (oral/poster) will be based solely on how best to communicate the work. Second CfP Seventh Workshop on Resources for African Indigenous Languages (RAIL)@LREC
by Menno Van Zaanen 28 Jan '26

28 Jan '26

Second Call for Papers Seventh Workshop on Resources for African Indigenous Languages (RAIL) Co-located with LREC 2026 RAIL Workshop date: 12 May 2026 RAIL website: https://sadilar.org/en/seventh-workshop-on-resources-for-african-indigenous… Submission link for the RAIL workshop: https://softconf.com/lrec2026/RAIL2026/ LREC Conference dates: 11-16 May 2026 LREC website: https://www.elra.info/lrec2026/ Venue: Palau de Congressos de Palma, Palma de Mallorca (Spain) The Resources for African Indigenous Languages (RAIL) workshop provides an interdisciplinary platform for researchers working on resources such as data collections and annotations, Human Language Technologies (HLT) and Natural Language Processing (NLP) tools, and their applications, specifically targeted towards African indigenous languages. In particular, it aims to create the conditions for the emergence of a scientific community of practice that focuses on data, as well as computational linguistic tools specifically designed for or applied to indigenous languages found in Africa. The seventh Resources for African Indigenous Languages (RAIL) workshop will be co-located with the Language Resources and Evaluation Conference (LREC) 2026 in Palau de Congressos de Palma, Palma, Mallorca (Spain). Many African languages are under-resourced while only a few are considered to be somewhat better resourced. These languages often share interesting properties such as writing systems, making them different from most high-resourced languages. From a computational perspective, these languages lack enough corpora to undertake high level development of NLP and HLT tools, which in turn impedes the development of African languages in these areas. During previous workshops, it was noted that the problems and solutions presented were not only applicable to African languages but were also relevant to many other low-resource languages across the world. Because these languages share similar challenges, this workshop provides researchers with opportunities to work collaboratively on issues of language resource development and learn from each other. The RAIL workshop has several aims. First, the workshop brings together researchers who work on African indigenous languages, forming a community of practice for people working on indigenous languages. Second, the workshop aims to reveal currently unknown or unpublished existing resources (corpora, NLP tools, and applications), resulting in a better overview of the current state-of-the-art, and also allows for discussions on novel, desired resources for future research in this area. Third, it enhances sharing of knowledge on the development of low-resource languages. Finally, it enables discussions on how to improve the quality as well as availability of the resources. The workshop theme is “Creating resources for less-resourced African languages”, but submissions on any topic related to properties of African indigenous languages (including related non-African languages) may be accepted. Suggested topics include (but are not limited to) the following: * Digital representations of linguistic structures * Descriptions of corpora or other data sets of African indigenous languages * Building resources for (under-resourced) African indigenous languages * Developing and using African indigenous languages in the digital age * Effectiveness of digital technologies for the development of African indigenous languages * Revealing unknown or unpublished existing resources for African indigenous languages * Developing desired resources for African indigenous languages * Improving quality, availability and accessibility of African indigenous language resources * Applications that make use of data collections of African indigenous languages Submission requirements: We invite papers on original, unpublished work related to the topics of the workshop. Submissions, presenting completed work, should adhere to the LREC conference requirements. These requirements are described in LREC’s authors kit: https://lrec2026.info/authors-kit/. The submission should be double blind and each submission should be between four and eight pages. Only oral papers should be submitted. The maximum number of pages excludes a compulsory ethics statement, discussion on limitations, and references and optional acknowledgements, as well as data and code availability statements if applicable. Appendices or supplementary material are allowed, but this information will not necessarily be taken into account during the review process. The submission link for the RAIL workshop: https://softconf.com/lrec2026/RAIL2026/ Authors are encouraged to upload their datasets to the SADiLaR repository: https://repo.sadilar.org/. In case of difficulties uploading the datasets, please reach out to Benito Trollip (benito.trollip(a)nwu.ac.za). Second CfP: The 20th Linguistic Annotation Workshop (LAW XX), co-located with ACL 2026
by Amir.Zeldes＠georgetown.edu 27 Jan '26

27 Jan '26

Second Call for Papers: The 20th Linguistic Annotation Workshop (LAW XX), co-located with ACL 2026, San Diego Website: https://sigann.github.io/LAW-XX-2026/ Linguistic annotation of natural language corpora is the backbone of supervised methods in both statistical and neural natural language processing. Annotated corpora are also a major supporting source of information for unsupervised methods, multitask learning, and evaluation of both NLP tools and theories about language within and outside of linguistics. LAW-XX will provide a forum for presentation and discussion of innovative research on all aspects of linguistic annotation, including creation/evaluation of annotation schemes, methods for automatic and manual annotation, use and evaluation of annotation software and frameworks, representation of linguistic data and annotations, semi-supervised “human in the loop” methods of annotation, crowd-sourcing approaches, and more. LAW XX will also provide a forum for annotation researchers to work towards standardization, best practices, and interoperability of annotation information and software. Special Theme: Errors in Annotation The special theme of LAW XX is Errors in Annotation. In addition to LAW’s general topics, we specifically invite submissions on the matter of addressing annotations which are in some sense objectively incorrect in their substance or omissions (c.f. Klie et al., CL 2023)—distinct from annotator disagreement (Weber-Genzel et al., ACL 2024)—and the role of error analysis in improving data quality for both human-annotated and LLM-generated datasets. As data quality becomes increasingly important (human-annotated or LLM-generated), it is essential to develop techniques or tools to quantify data quality (Swayamdipta et al., EMNLP 2020). Potential topics covered include but are not limited to: * Annotation error detection * Annotation error correction * Error type classification * Error detection and correction in crowd-sourced annotations * Errors in LLM-generated annotations Important Dates All submission deadlines are 11:59 p.m. UTC-12:00 ("anywhere on Earth"). * Submission deadline: March 5, 2026 * Pre-reviewed ARR commitment deadline: March 24, 2026 * Notification of acceptance: April 28, 2026 * Camera-ready papers due: May 12, 2026 * Workshop Date: TBD LAW XX will be hybrid, allowing both in-person and virtual presentations. Submission Information We welcome submissions of long and short papers, posters, and demonstrations relating to the special theme or any aspect of linguistic annotation, including: * Annotation procedures o Innovative automated and manual strategies for annotation o Machine learning and knowledge-based methods for automation of corpus annotation o Creation, maintenance, and interactive exploration of annotation structures and annotated data * Annotation evaluation o Inter-annotator agreement and other evaluation metrics and strategies o Qualitative evaluation of linguistic representations o Innovative means to evaluate annotation quality * Annotation access and use o Representation formats/structures for annotations of different phenomena, especially annotations* at multiple levels, and means to explore/manipulate them * Linguistic considerations for merging annotations of distinct phenomena * Annotation schemes, guidelines, and standards o New and innovative annotation schemes, comparison of annotation schemes o Methodologies and resources for annotation scheme development o Best practices for annotation procedures and/or development and documentation of annotation schemes o Interoperability of annotation formats and/or frameworks among different systems as well as different tasks, frameworks, modalities, and languages * Results from the application and evaluation of standards for linguistic annotation o Annotation software and frameworks o Development, evaluation and/or innovative use of annotation software frameworks Direct submission link: https://openreview.net/group?id=aclweb.org/ACL/2026/Workshop/LAW Pre-reviewed ARR commitment link: https://openreview.net/group?id=aclweb.org/ACL/2026/Workshop/LAW_ARR_Commitment Note on OpenReview's moderation policy for newly created profiles: * New profiles created without an institutional email will go through a moderation process that can take up to two weeks. * New profiles created with an institutional email will be activated automatically. Submissions should report original and unpublished research on topics of interest to the workshop. We also invite substantiated position papers, in particular with regard to our special theme. Accepted papers are expected to be presented at the workshop (either in-person or virtually) and will be published in the workshop proceedings. They should emphasize obtained results rather than intended work, and should indicate clearly the state of completion of the reported results. A paper accepted for presentation at the workshop must not be or have been presented at any other meeting with publicly available proceedings. Long/short paper submissions must use the official ACL style templates. Long papers must not exceed eight (8) pages of content. Short papers and demonstration papers must not exceed four (4) pages of content. References do not count against these limits. Limitation and ethical consideration sections are optional and do not count against these limits as well. Note: The appendix also does not count against the page limit but should not include essential details needed to understand/review the paper (appendices can contain details such as hyperparameters, formulas, proofs, and tables that are informative but not critical to the understanding of the paper). All submissions must be in PDF format. Reviewing of papers will be double-blind. Authors of papers that have been or will be submitted to other meetings or publications must provide this information to the workshop program chairs ( <mailto:law2026workshop@googlegroups.com> law2026workshop(a)googlegroups.com). Authors of accepted papers must notify the program chairs within 10 days of acceptance if the paper is withdrawn for any reason. Following the ACL and ARR policies, there is no anonymity period requirement.

We will accept submissions that fit into CoNLL’s scope (see above for a description) and have been published in 2024, 2025, and 2026 in relevant conferences (*ACL, COLING, NeurIPS, ICLR, CogSci, …) and journals (TACL, Computational Linguistics, other journals in the areas of interest for CoNLL). Multiple submission policy: CoNLL 2026 follows the ACL 2026 policy, which follows the ARR policy: CoNLL “precludes multiple submissions […] will not consider any paper that is under review in a journal or another conference at the time of submission, and submitted papers must not be submitted elsewhere during the […] review period. This policy covers all journals and refereed and archival conferences and workshops […] In addition, we will not consider any paper that overlaps significantly in content or results with papers that will be (or have been) published elsewhere.” Authors submitting more than one paper to CoNLL 2026 must ensure that the submissions do not overlap significantly (>25%) with each other in content or results. Submission of pre-prints to arXiv and other platforms: we again follow the same policy as ARR: “[archival] submissions will remain anonymous during peer review, but authors are free to post and discuss non-anonymous preprints at any time.” Also please be aware of OpenReview's moderation policy for newly created profiles —we advise you to create a profile well in advance: New profiles created without an institutional email will go through a moderation process that can take up to two weeks. New profiles created with an institutional email will be activated automatically. Timeline (All deadlines are 11:59pm UTC-12h, AoE) Submission deadline (archival and non-archival): February 19 2026 Notification of acceptance: April 21 2026 Camera-ready papers due: May 12 2026 Conference: July 3-4, 2026 Further information Further information will be announced in the 3rd Call for Papers. We are pleased to announce the ClinSkill QA shared task, co-located with the BioNLP workshop at ACL 2026. TASK HOMEPAGE: https://whunextgen.github.io/ClinicalskillQA/ INTRODUCTION Multimodal large language models (MLLMs) have the potential to support clinical training and assessment by assisting medical experts in interpreting procedural videos and verifying adherence to standardized workflows. Reliable deployment in these settings requires evidence that models can continuously interpret students’ actions during clinical skill assessments, which underpins MLLMs’ understanding of clinical skills. Systematically evaluating and improving MLLMs’ understanding of clinical skills and their continuous perception in clinical skill assessment scenarios is therefore essential for building reliable and high-impact AI systems for medical education. To address this need, the shared task on medical question answering targets clinical skill assessment scenarios. IMPORTANT DATES Release of task data : Jan 30, 2026 Paper submission deadline: Apr 17, 2026 Notification of acceptance: May 4, 2026 Camera-ready paper due: May 12, 2026 BioNLP Workshop Date: July 3 or 4, 2026 Note that all deadlines are 23:59:59 AoE (UTC-12). TASK DEFINITION ClinSkill QA formulates clinical skill understanding and continuous perception for clinical skill assessment as an ordering task: the MLLM is required to arrange shuffled key frames into a coherent sequence of clinical actions and to provide explanations for the resulting order. The dataset is constructed from video clips of medical student clinical procedures, collected from Zhongnan Hospital of Wuhan University and cofun (http://www.curefun.com/). This study was approved by the Institutional Review Board (IRB), and all data collection and processing followed relevant ethical guidelines. DATASET ClinSkill QA is built on 200 sets of shuffled key frames extracted from three types of clinical skill videos. Each set of key frames represents a sequence of continuous actions and is accompanied by expert-annotated ground-truth ordering and order rationales. EVALUATION For evaluation, we use Task Accuracy (exact ordering) and Pairwise Accuracy (the fraction of adjacent pairs correctly ordered) for the ordering results, and BertScore as well as an LLM-as-judge(G-Eval) for assessing the quality of the ordering explanations. For the i-th sample (a set of shuffled keyframes): Ordering evaluation - Task Accuracy - Pairwise Accuracy Rationale evaluation - BertScore -LLM-as-Judge（G-Eval） REGISTRATION AND SUBMISSION Registration and Submission will be done via CodaBench (Link will be available soon on the task home page) Each team is allowed up to ten successful submissions on CodaBench. All shared task participants are invited to submit a paper describing their systems to the Proceedings of BioNLP 2026 (https://aclweb.org/aclwiki/BioNLP_Workshop) at ACL 2026 (https://2026.aclweb.org/). Papers must follow the submission instructions of the BioNLP 2026 workshop (https://aclweb.org/aclwiki/BioNLP_Workshop).
