NAIMES (Naming Artificial Intelligence Metric Evaluation System) is a postdoctoral Marie Curie research project examining the reliability of AI-generated translations, with a particular focus on the translation of proper names.
The project uses parliamentary discourse from ParlaMint 5.0, a multilingual corpus of European parliamentary proceedings, as its source material. Such institutional texts contain names of people, or anthroponyms (e.g. Keir Starmer); names of places, or toponyms (e.g. Spain, Berlin); and names of organisations, events, and products, known as chrematonyms (e.g. Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Istanbul Convention).
Proper names are closely tied to language, culture, and society, and their forms and meanings may evolve and vary across contexts. As a result, the translation of proper names raises specific challenges for AI-based translation systems. The aim of NAIMES is to evaluate and compare how ChatGPT translates proper names from English, German, and Czech into Spanish, and to identify recurring translation patterns.
The project has now entered its publication and dissemination phase. Upcoming activities include workshops on onomastics and language technologies at Palacký University Olomouc (together with project supervisor Dr. Enrique Gutiérrez Rubio, Department of Romance Languages) and Leipzig University (with Prof. Dr. Carsten Sinner).
