Hence, variable, table, and column names were short and cryptic. Moreover, documents describing these names are buried in forgotten places if they still exist. The National University of Ireland Galway is recruiting a full-time, fixed term Postdoctoral Researcher for the project Multilingual Island: Sites of Translation and Encounter (MISTE). The project takes a ‘shared island’ approach to create an in-depth understanding of intercultural encounters in Ireland through the lens of language and translation, comparing settings in Galway and Belfast. The position is funded under the North-South Research Programme. *Project Description* This project will measure multilingual practices to investigate the role of translation in bringing together migrants/refugees and local communities; and to explore the creative potential of translation to raise awareness of cultural diversity in Ireland. The project compares approaches to language and migrant/refugee integration in different sites with a view to informing policy and best practice. MISTE will work in Galway and Belfast to - Measure multilingual practices in sites of everyday encounters between migrants/refugees and local communities (religious sites, sports grounds, community centres, libraries); - Investigate the role of translation (including non-professional translation provided by religious figures, social workers etc.) in everyday encounters between migrants/refugees and local communities; - Explore the creative potential of translation to establish a dialogue between migrants and the community, and to provide a migrant perspective on the theme of Ireland as a ‘shared island’; - Compare how Northern and Southern approaches to migrant/refugee integration impact the practice of multilingualism. The research team comprises researchers in University of Galway (Prof. Anne O’Connor; Dr. Andrea Ciribuco, Dr. Lorna Shaughnessy) and in QUB (Dr. Piotr Blumczynski). The researcher will be based in the Moore Institute for Research in the Humanities and Social Studies, located in the Hardiman Research Building in University of Galway and will work on sites in Galway and in Belfast. *Contract duration: 1 February 2023 – 31 July 2024 (18 months)* *Job Description* The Postdoctoral Researcher (PDR) will perform ethnographic observations of religious and sport sites in Galway and Belfast, coordinating with researchers from the QUB team. They will focus on multilingual interactions in the sites, taking informed annotations on language use, translation, (including non-professional translation and interpreting, and language brokering), objects and tools. Subsequently, in conjunction with the other team members, as appropriate, the PDR will conduct semi-structured interviews in each site. The PDR will also be involved in the organisation of translation workshops that engage with multilingual migrants in the area, liaising with civil society partners. The post places emphasis on ethnographic work and community engagement. The PDR will be responsible for the transcription and pseudonymisation of interviews and session recordings and for qualitative coding of data through Nvivo to individuate common themes and enable a comparative North-South analysis. The PDR will be involved in the dissemination of project findings and raise awareness on the potential of multilingual, migrant perspective for a ‘shared Ireland’. The University of Galway is recruiting a full-time, fixed term Postdoctoral Researcher for 36 months. The successful candidate will join a diverse and international research team on the PIETRA Project led by Professor Anne O’Connor, School of Languages, Literatures and Cultures. The position is funded by a European Research Council Consolidator Grant awarded to Professor O’Connor and is available from March 2023 for 36 months. *The project* PIETRA is the first, large-scale, multilingual study of the translation products and processes that underpin communication in global religion. The project focuses on translation practices in the institution of the Catholic Church and the multilingual communication of religious messages against a background of technological change. It poses key research questions relating to consistency of message in a large multilingual institution across different languages, cultures and communicative formats. PIETRA analyses the translation processes and products of the Catholic Church across three different media (print, web and social media) and in two different time periods to advance understandings of how multilingual dissemination intersects with technological change and institutional ideology. PIETRA combines the latest advances in empirical translation research, data capture and analytics, with sociological and ethnographic investigations to form a model for the analysis of the products and processes of large-scale multilingual dissemination. *The place* This post will be based in the Moore Institute for Research in the Humanities and Social Studies, located in the Hardiman Research Building at the University of Galway. The researcher will work with the other members of the research team and will benefit from dedicated training, mentorship and networking activities. The research team will comprise of the PI, 2 postdoctoral researchers, 2 Research Assistants and 3 doctoral students. *Job Description:* The Postdoctoral Researcher (PDR) will work on the analysis of translations published on digital platforms, social media and news websites by the Catholic Church. Stigma can occur at multiple levels and in different contexts. In this project, we seek to better understand how context affects a person’s experience of stigma by studying stories collected through social media and surveys. The long-term goal of this research is to identify leverage points for stigma reduction interventions at multiple levels (e.g., individual, family, community) and in multiple settings (e.g., workplace, school, etc.), and to begin to build the foundations for subsequent interventions by engaging stakeholders and developing community partnerships. We are seeking a postdoctoral fellow to apply natural language processing and machine learning methods to the analysis of narrative data from two sources, social media and stories of stigma-related experiences and strategies for overcoming these challenges, collected using the survey method. The postdoctoral fellow would play a key role in study design, data collection, and data analysis in a multidisciplinary team of different backgrounds, including but not limited to informatics, nursing, social work, and psychology. Several decisions on patient inclusion/exclusion and coding of key study variables in clinical studies are taken out of the hands of clinicians and put into the care of NLP systems. However, clinical care is not always equitable; for example, women present very different stroke symptoms from men, leading to underdiagnosis and undertreatment of female stroke victims. These inequities are inevitably encoded in the electronic health records (EHR) corpora mined by clinical data scientists. *The aim of this project *is to study the extent to which existing healthcare inequities are propagated by the application of text mining/NLP to EHR records and to develop methods to assess and reduce the impact of the encoded inequities. This project is part of the Gravitation programme Public Values in the Algorithmic Society <https://www.nwo.nl/en/researchprogrammes/gravitation>(ALGOSOC). The Gravitation programme is an initiative by the Dutch government to support excellent research in the Netherlands. The funding is reserved for scientific consortia that have the potential to rank among the world's best in their field. ALGOSOC is a response to the urgent need for an informed societal perspective on automated decision-making. Funded by the ministry for Education, Culture and Science for a period for 10 years, research in the ALGOSOC programme will develop a deep understanding of the systemic changes that automated decision making entails for core public institutions, for society, and for how public values are realized. The research will focus on three sectors: justice, health and media. The programme brings together researchers in law, communication science, computer science, media studies, philosophy, public governance, STS, economy and social sciences from five Dutch universities (Amsterdam, Utrecht, Tilburg, Delft and Rotterdam). Together, the ALGOSOC community will develop solutions for the design of governance frameworks needed to complement technology-driven initiatives in the algorithmic society. *What are you going to do* *Tasks and responsibilities* - Develop, conduct, and publish research on the field of clinical NLP and data science; - Active participation in the research teams of the UU M&S department <https://www.uu.nl/en/organisation/methodology-and-statistics> and especially in the groups of Human Data Science <https://hds.sites.uu.nl/> and NLP <https://nlp.sites.uu.nl/>; - Contribute to the public debate and organise outreach activities of ALGOSOC; - Contribute to the overall program in terms of events, research meetings, activities; - Collaborate with other researchers within the ALGOSOC consortium; - Help co-supervising research projects of students working on related topics. *What do we require* - A Master degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Computational Linguistics, or a related field with interest in medical applications, *or*; - A Master degree in technical medicine or similar and experience in NLP; - A background in machine learning and deep learning is a plus; - Strong programming skills; - An excellent written and spoken command of English, as demonstrated by publications in English-language journals (written and spoken command of other languages, including French, German and/or Dutch is a plus); - The ability, willingness, and commitment to do both autonomous and team work; - Experience with organising workshops, lecture series, and similar events; *Our offer* The vacancy is for 1.0 FTE for 4 years. The appointment is initially for one year, starting in 2023, with a possibility of extension after a positive evaluation. We are excited to announce the AI, Data Science and Text Analytics Resources for Education Turing workshop 2023 at University of Leeds on Tuesday the 10th of January 2023. The workshop will bring together researchers and educators in universities and industry to learn about AI, Data Science and Text Analytics education. It will be an online workshop via Zoom. Participants are invited to give a presentation on a topic related to their field of research for advanced postgraduate-level studies with the aim to collate these resources into an open-access teaching and learning repository. For instance, your presentation can demonstrate how to build a chatbot or how to use BERT models…etc. OR you can overview an existing set of relevant teaching materials that could be shared for online teaching in AI/DS/TA. The deadline for submitting the details of your presentation is Friday the 9th of December 2022. Registration is now open: https://store.edgehill.ac.uk/conferences-and-events/conferences/events/edge… Abstract The Dialogue Annotation and Research Tool (DART) is a freeware tool that makes it possible to annotate large amounts of dialogue data semi-automatically on a number of linguistic levels, as well as post-process and analyse the resulting corpora efficiently using various corpus analysis methods (https://martinweisser.org/ling_soft.html#DART<https://eur01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fmartinwei…>). Perhaps arguably, the most interesting and important levels of analysis produced by the tool from the point of view of corpus pragmatics are the syntactic and the speech-act level, but DART annotations also comprise information about the semantics (topics), semantico-pragmatic (modes; Searle's IFIDs), surface polarity, (completion) status, and disfluency of units. In this talk, I want to begin by providing a brief overview of the background, genesis and development of the tool. Next, we'll discuss the different levels of annotation, their potential significance in pragmatics, and how they may work together in determining the pragmatic meaning potential in the form of speech acts. I'll then briefly illustrate how it's possible to adapt the resources used for the annotation process to new domains, as well as the steps involved in the annotation process itself.
