by Ekaterina Kochmar 13 Mar '26

13 Mar '26

Second Call for Papers The 21st Workshop on Innovative Use of NLP for Building Educational Applications (BEA 2026) San Diego, California, United States and online Thursday, July 2 and Friday, July 3, 2026 (co-located with ACL 2026) https://sig-edu.org/bea/current Submission: https://softconf.com/acl2026/bea2026/ Submission Deadline: Monday, March 23, 2026, 11:59pm UTC-12 WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION The BEA Workshop is a leading venue for NLP innovation in the context of educational applications. It is one of the largest one-day workshops in the ACL community with over 100 registered attendees in the past several years. The growing interest in educational applications and a diverse community of researchers involved resulted in the creation of the Special Interest Group in Educational Applications<https://sig-edu.org/members> (SIGEDU) in 2017, which currently has over 400 members. The 21st BEA will be a 2-day workshop, with one in-person workshop day and one virtual workshop day. The workshop will feature oral presentation sessions and large poster sessions to facilitate the presentation of a wide array of original research. Moreover, there will be a panel discussion on “Transitioning from Academia to the EdTech Industry<https://sig-edu.org/news/bea21-call-for-panelists/>”, a half-day tutorial on Theory of Mind and its Applications in Educational Contexts, and two shared tasks on Vocabulary Difficulty Prediction for English Learners<https://www.britishcouncil.org/data-science-and-insights/bea2026st> and on Rubric-based Short Answer Scoring for German<https://edutec.science/bea-2026-shared-task/> comprising an oral overview presentation by the shared task organizers and several poster presentations by the shared task participants. The workshop will accept submissions of both full papers and short papers, eligible for either oral or poster presentation. We solicit papers that incorporate NLP methods, including, but not limited to: * use of generative AI in education and its impact; * automated scoring of open-ended textual and spoken responses; * automated scoring/evaluation for written student responses (across multiple genres); * game-based instruction and assessment; * educational data mining; * intelligent tutoring; * collaborative learning environments; * peer review; * grammatical error detection and correction; * learner cognition; * spoken dialog; * multimodal applications; * annotation standards and schemas; * tools and applications for classroom teachers, learners and/or test developers; and * use of corpora in educational tools. PANEL We invite applications and nominations for panelists to participate in a panel discussion on “Transitioning from Academia to the EdTech Industry.” Please see the call for panelists here: https://sig-edu.org/news/bea21-call-for-panelists/. SHARED TASKS Vocabulary Difficulty Prediction for English Learners Organizers: Mariano Felice (British Council) and Lucy Skidmore (British Council). Description: This shared task aims to advance research into vocabulary difficulty prediction for learners of English with diverse L1 backgrounds, an essential step towards custom content creation, computer-adaptive testing and personalised learning. In a context where traditional item calibration methods have become a bottleneck for the implementation of digital learning and assessment systems, we believe predictive NLP models can provide a more scalable, cost-effective solution. The goal of this shared task is to build regression models to predict the difficulty of English words given a learner’s L1. We believe this new shared task provides a novel approach to vocabulary modelling, offering a multidimensional perspective that has not been explored in previous work. To this aim, we will use the British Council’s Knowledge-based Vocabulary Lists (KVL), a multilingual dataset with psychometrically calibrated difficulty scores. We believe this unique dataset is not only an invaluable contribution to the NLP community but also a powerful resource that will enable in-depth investigations into how linguistic features, L1 background and contextual cues influence vocabulary difficulty. For more information on how to participate and latest updates, please refer to the shared task website: https://www.britishcouncil.org/data-science-and-insights/bea2026st Rubric-based Short Answer Scoring for German Organizers: Sebastian Gombert (DIPF), Zhifan Sun (DIPF), Fabian Zehner (DIPF), Jannik Lossjew (IPN), Tobias Wyrwich (IPN), Berrit Katharina Czinczel (IPN), David Bednorz (IPN), Sascha Bernholt (IPN), Knut Neumann (IPN), Ute Harms (IPN), Aiso Heinze (IPN), and Hendrik Drachsler (DIPF) Description: Short answer scoring is a well-established task in educational natural language processing. In this shared task, we introduce and focus on rubric-based short-answer scoring, a task formulation in which models are provided with a question, a student answer, and a textual scoring rubric that specifies criteria for each possible score level. Successfully solving this task requires models to interpret the semantics of scoring rubrics and apply their criteria to previously unseen answers, closely mirroring how human raters assign scores in educational assessment. Although rubrics have been used as auxiliary information in prior work on free-text scoring and LLM-based approaches, there has been little focused investigation of rubric-based short-answer scoring as a task in its own right. This setting poses distinct challenges, including ambiguous or underspecified rubric criteria and a wide range of valid student responses. With this shared task, we aim to stimulate systematic research on rubric-based scoring, assess how well current NLP methods can reason over rubrics, and identify promising modeling strategies. Additionally, by providing a German-language dataset, the shared task contributes a new non-English benchmark to the field. For more information on how to participate and latest updates, please refer to the shared task website: https://edutec.science/bea-2026-shared-task/ TUTORIAL Theory of Mind and Application in Educational Context Organizers: Effat Farhana (Auburn University), Maha Zainab (Auburn University), Qiaosi Wang (Carnegie Mellon University), Niloofar Mireshghallah (Carnegie Mellon University), Ramira van der Meulen (Leiden University), Max van Duijn (Leiden University). Description: This tutorial examines the integration of Theory of Mind (ToM) into AI-driven online tutoring systems, focusing on how advanced technologies, such as Large Language Models (LLMs), can model learners’ cognitive and emotional states to provide adaptive, personalized feedback. Participants will learn foundational principles of ToM from cognitive science and psychology and how these concepts can be operationalized in AI systems. We will discuss mutual ToM, where both AI tutors and learners maintain models of each other’s mental states, and address challenges such as detecting learner misconceptions, modeling meta-cognition, and maintaining privacy in data-driven tutoring. The tutorial also presents hands-on demonstrations of Machine ToM applied to programming education using datasets such as CS1QA and CodeQA, which contain Java and Python samples. By combining conceptual foundations, research insights, and practical exercises, this tutorial provides a comprehensive overview of designing human-centered, ethically aware, and cognitively informed AI tutoring systems. IMPORTANT DATES All deadlines are 11.59 pm UTC-12 (anywhere on earth). * Submission deadline: Monday, March 23, 2026 * Notification of acceptance: Tuesday, April 28, 2026 * Camera-ready papers due: Tuesday, May 12, 2026 * Workshop: Thursday, July 2, and Friday, July 3, 2026 SUBMISSION INFORMATION We will be using the ACL Submission Guidelines for the BEA Workshop this year. Authors are invited to submit a long paper of up to eight (8) pages of content, plus unlimited references; final versions of long papers will be given one additional page of content (up to 9 pages) so that reviewers’ comments can be taken into account. by Lauersdorf, Mark R. 13 Mar '26

13 Mar '26

**FINAL** CALL FOR ABSTRACTS *** 2026 NARNiHS Research Incubator *** North American Research Network in Historical Sociolinguistics *** 8th edition *** 07-09 May 2026 -- entirely online! ==> Abstract Submission Deadline ==> 23 March 2026, 11:59 PM (U.S. Eastern Time) The 2026 NARNiHS Research Incubator is an entirely online event (**with free registration**). This event offers an opportunity for scholars in historical sociolinguistics from all over the world to participate in discussions of cutting-edge research without the limitations imposed by international travel. We encourage our fellow historical sociolinguists and scholars from related fields in our global scholarly community to join us online for our Research Incubator this spring. Abstract submission deadline: 23 March 2026, 11:59 PM (U.S. Eastern Time) Abstract submission online: https://easyabs.linguistlist.org/submit/2026_Incubator/ The North American Research Network in Historical Sociolinguistics (NARNiHS) is accepting abstracts for its 2026 NARNiHS Research Incubator. The 8th edition of this inclusive NARNiHS event seeks to provide a collaborative environment where presenters bring work that is in-progress, exploratory, proof-of-concept, prototyping. The Incubator's audience actively participates in workshopping these new ideas, brainstorming along with the presenters to forge scholarly paths and develop research solutions. We see the NARNiHS Research Incubator as a place for testing and pushing boundaries; developing new theories, methods, models, and tools in historical sociolinguistics; seeking feedback from peers; and engaging in productive assessment of fledgling ideas and nascent projects. NARNiHS welcomes papers in all areas of historical sociolinguistics, which is understood as the application/development of sociolinguistic theories, methods, and models for the study of historical language variation and change over time, or more broadly, the study of the interaction of language and society in historical periods and from historical perspectives. Thus, a wide range of linguistic areas, subdisciplines, and methodologies easily find their place within the field, and we encourage submission of abstracts that reflect this broad scope. Successful abstracts for this research incubator environment will demonstrate thorough grounding in historical sociolinguistics, scientific rigor in the formulation of research questions, and promise for rich discussion of ideas. Abstracts should be explicit about which theoretical frameworks, methodological protocols, and analytical strategies are being applied or critiqued. Data sources and examples should be sufficiently (if briefly) presented, so as to allow reviewers a full understanding of the scope and claims of the research. Please note that the connection of your research to the field of historical sociolinguistics should be explicitly outlined in your abstract. Abstracts should not exceed one page (not including examples and references, see below). Failure to adhere to these criteria will likely result in rejection. We are soliciting abstracts for 25-minute presentations. Presenters will have the entire 25 minutes for their presentations, with discussion happening in the "incubation session" at the end of each panel. Presentations will be grouped into thematic panels of three presentations, each panel followed by an hour-long discussion with the audience led by specialists, creating a brainstorming/workshopping environment that encourages maximum exchange of ideas. Discussion will encompass specific feedback on the individual papers as well as consideration of overarching questions of theory, methods, and models emerging from the papers. To facilitate such discussion, authors will be required to submit a draft of their presentation materials for distribution to the panel discussants and to the other presenters a few days prior to the start of the conference. Abstracts will be accepted until Monday, 23 March 2026 -- late abstracts will not be considered. *** Abstract Content Requirements: 1) Abstracts should be explicit about which theoretical frameworks, methodological protocols, and analytical strategies are being applied or critiqued. 2) Data sources and examples should be sufficiently (if briefly) presented, so as to allow reviewers a full understanding of the scope and claims of the research. 3) The connection of your research to the field of historical sociolinguistics should be explicitly outlined. *** Abstract Format Guidelines: 1) Abstracts must be submitted in PDF format. 2) Abstracts must fit on one standard 8.5×11 inch or A4 page, with margins no smaller than 1 inch / 2.5 cm and a font style and size no smaller than Times New Roman 12-point. All additional content (visualizations, trees, tables, figures, captions, examples, and references) must fit on a single (1) additional page. No exceptions to these requirements are allowed; abstracts exceeding these limits will be rejected without review. 3) Anonymize your abstract. We realize that sometimes complete anonymity is not attainable, but there is a difference between the nature of the research creating an inability to anonymize and careless non-anonymizing (in citations, references, file names, etc.). Be sure to anonymize your PDF file (you may do so in Adobe Acrobat Reader by clicking on "File", then "Properties", removing your name if it appears in the "Author" line of the "Description" tab, and re-saving the file before submission). Do not use your name when saving your PDF (e.g. Smith_Abstract.pdf); file names will not be automatically anonymized by the EasyAbs system. Rather, use non-identifying information in your file name (e.g. HistSoc4Lyfe.pdf). Your name should only appear in the online form accompanying your abstract submission. Papers that are not sufficiently anonymized wherever possible will be rejected without review. *** General Conference Requirements: 1) Abstracts must be submitted electronically, using the following link: https://easyabs.linguistlist.org/submit/2026_Incubator/ 2) Papers must be delivered as projected in the abstract or represent bona fide developments of the same research. 3) Authors are expected to virtually attend the conference and present their own papers. 4) Presentations will be delivered via Zoom. Technical details and instructions regarding the platform will be sent to authors in due time. Please contact us at NARNiHistSoc(a)gmail.com with any questions.

Call for Chapters- Data-Driven Language Teaching and Learning: Theory, Research, and Practice (Springer)
by Cansu Akan 13 Mar '26

13 Mar '26

Dear colleagues, We are pleased to announce an upcoming edited volume on "Data-Driven Language Teaching and Learning: Theory, Research, and Practice", to be published by Springer. With this email, we warmly invite chapter proposals from researchers, teacher educators, curriculum designers, and practitioners working across corpus linguistics, applied linguistics, language education, and educational technology. TOPIC OVERVIEW Data-Driven Learning (DDL), first introduced by Tim Johns (1991) as a method of classroom concordancing, has evolved considerably over the past three decades. Despite a substantial body of empirical evidence supporting corpus-based approaches for raising learner awareness, developing language autonomy, and supporting inductive learning, a persistent gap remains between research-based insights and everyday instructional decision-making. This volume addresses this gap directly. Through empirically grounded contributions, it demonstrates how data can be used to support instructional design, materials development, classroom interaction, and assessment -- enabling more informed and transparent pedagogical choices without requiring advanced technical expertise. By adopting a cross-contextual and language-independent perspective, the volume identifies transferable principles applicable across a wide range of teaching settings. We invite chapter proposals addressing topics including, but not limited to: - Corpus-based and data-driven approaches to language teaching, learning, and assessment - Data-informed instructional design and materials development - Classroom applications of DDL across educational levels and language learning contexts - Learner engagement with corpus tools and concordancing tasks - AI-assisted feedback, adaptive learning platforms, and intelligent tutoring systems in DDL contexts - Learner corpus research and its implications for pedagogy - Teacher education and professional development through data-informed practice - Digital tools, corpus technologies, and blended or online learning environments - Challenges and affordances of implementing DDL in multilingual or under-resourced settings - Theoretical and methodological frameworks for data-driven language pedagogy - Cross-contextual and comparative studies of data-informed teaching HOW TO CONTRIBUTE The volume operates a two-stage submission process. Stage 1 - Abstract Submission Prospective contributors are invited to submit an abstract of 400-600 words by 1 May 2026. Abstracts should include: - Title and full names and institutional affiliations of all contributors - A clear statement of the chapter’s focus, argument, research questions, and main contribution - The theoretical and/or empirical approach to be employed - The educational context, data, or corpus under investigation (if applicable) - The chapter’s relevance to the volume’s overarching themes - A short bibliography of key references (not counted in the word limit) Stage 2 - Full Chapter Submission Authors of accepted abstracts will be invited to submit full chapters of 7,000-9,000 words (including references) by October 2026. CFP: MIRROR@IberLEF2026: Platform online
by Luis Villaseñor-Pineda 12 Mar '26

<Apologies for cross-postings> -------------------------------------- *CALL FOR PARTICIPATION * -------------------------------------- MIRROR@IberLEF20206: Motivational Interviewing Response & Rating via Synthetic cOnversational tuRns Challenge platform now online: https://www.mirror-iberlef.lat/dashboard Just register, log in, and start making submissions. ------------------------------- ****Task description**** ------------------------------- We invite the community to develop Generative AI (GenAI) methods for creating synthetic conversation turns that can substantially improve the performance of models trained to recognize behavior codes (BCs) in the context of motivational interviews. A BC is a discrete, observable clinician action (e.g., asking a question, giving information) that is counted during coding of a motivational interviewing session to quantify specific techniques used. These codes allow raters to tally how often particular clinician behaviours occur, which helps assess adherence to MI-consistent versus MI-inconsistent practice. Our ultimate goal is to generate valuable data for training models for the automatic assessment of clinicians’ motivational-interviewing skills. These skills — crucial for promoting behavior change among patients — can be evaluated by using the “Motivational Interviewing Treatment Integrity (MITI)” rubric (https://tinyurl.com/38byjrwy). ** *This is a data-centric competition: *participants are expected to produce high-quality datasets representing a wide range of clinical conversations (rather than training a model) to enhance the performance of a frozen baseline model used for BC classification. We encourage participants to include samples featuring clients from diverse backgrounds, varied conversation topics, and conversing with different types of health professionals. Participants in this competition should provide three datasets (one per pair of considered BCs) of at most 100 labeled conversation turns that will be used to fine-tune pretrained models; the fine-tuned models will then be used to make predictions for a hold-out dataset. The performance of the fine-tuned model will be used as the leading evaluation metric to rank participants. The considered pairs of BCs are: (1) Simple reflection vs. Complex reflection; (2) Open question vs. Closed question; (3) Persuasion vs. Giving Information. Sample submissions, and detailed instructions on the formatting, evaluation criteria and competition platform will be available at the MIRROR website. ------------------------------- ****Important dates**** ------------------------------- * Mar 9th: Start of the development phase (platform starts receiving submissions for the validation set) * May 1st: Start of the final phase (platform starts receiving submissions for the test set) * May 11th: End of evaluation campaign (deadline for submission of runs) * May 22nd; Publication of official results * Jun 8th: Deadline for paper submission * Jun 23th: Acceptance notification * Jun 30th: Camera-ready submission deadline * Sep, TBD: Publication of proceedings * Sep, TBD: Workshop with SEPLN 2026 ------------------------------- ****Organizing team**** ------------------------------- * Luis J. Second call for papers: ESSLLI 2026 Workshop on Referring expression choice in grounded contexts: Linguistic, cognitive, and computational aspects
by Gemma Boleda 12 Mar '26

12 Mar '26

Second call for papers: CORE Project Workshop @ESSLLI 2026 Referring expression choice in grounded contexts: Linguistic, cognitive, and computational aspects ESSLLI 2026 Workshop 3-7 August 2026, Prague, Czech Republic Abstract submission deadline: March 31, 2026 Workshop URL: https://www.upf.edu/web/glif/esslli2026-workshop ESSLLI 2026 URL: https://2026.esslli.eu Workshop description: When we refer to entities and events in our environment, particularly (but not only) when visual information is present, we have choices. Depending on what has been said before, who or what else is in a scene, and the characteristics of what we want to refer to, we might say (among many other options) "the person running", "the runner", "the woman in the red shirt", "the one with the glasses", or "them over there". The extent of this variation in referring expression (RE) choice has become evident in recent large-scale datasets (Monroe et al. 2017, Silberer et al. 2020, He et al. 2023). Some of the factors influencing some kinds of choices in RE use have been amply studied – for example, between full noun phrases and shorter expressions involving demonstratives or pronouns (Ariel 1990, Gundel et al. 1993 and much later work), or between noun phrases with and without modification (e.g., Degen et al. 2020, Rubio-Fernandez and Jara-Ettinger 2020, and literature cited there). Others have received less attention – these include choices among noun phrases that reflect different levels of taxonomic granularity ("dog" vs. "husky", Graf et al. 2016, Kobrock et al. 2024, Liang and Liao 2024), choices arising from the cross-classifiability of referents (woman vs. runner, Mädebach et al. 2022, Gualdoni et al. 2023), choices based on salience or contrast (Clarke et al. 2013, Rubio-Fernández 2024, Bolea et al. to appear) or options for referring to individuals based on what they are doing or the scenes they appear in ("person running" vs. "runner", Tagliaferri et al. 2023), sometimes with the goal of producing particular sorts of causal inferences (Sasaki et al. 2025). The goals of this workshop are 1) to further document and gain insight into the range of this variation; 2) to highlight its relevance for semantic/pragmatic theory, for theories of language and cognition, and for the use of language in computation; and 3) to promote communication and synergies between researchers at the interfaces of linguistics, cognitive science, and computation who have studied different aspects of referring expression choice in grounded contexts. We welcome contributions on the following and other related questions: - Cognitive biases that influence tendencies in RE choice in grounded contexts. - The role of contrast in RE choice. - The role of the specific available linguistic alternatives and alternative-based reasoning in influencing RE choice. - The information load a referring expression has to bear given extralinguistic sources of information in the context, especially visual information. - Lexical/constructional effects and association strength between RE options and the referent in question. - RE variability and language change Invited speakers: Raffaella Bernardi (Bolzano) Laia Mayol (UPF) Denis Paperno (Utrecht) Submission guidelines: Abstracts should be at most two pages in 12pt font (plus up to one extra page for data and references). Since we want to promote participation and discussion and no proceedings will be published, workshop submissions are not limited to unpublished work. We welcome proposals for both long (30 min. + discussion) and short (15 min. + discussion) presentations. We also plan to devote one day to a poster session accompanied by lightening talks. Please indicate on your abstract which type(s) of participation you are interested in. Submission deadline: March 31, 2026. Submission is through Open Review at: https://openreview.net/group?id=ESSLLI.eu/2026/Workshop/CORE Contact email: louise.mcnally(a)upf.edu Important dates: Deadline for abstract submission: March 31, 2026 Notification of acceptance: April 30, 2026 Workshop dates: August 3-7, 2026

Fully funded 3 year PhD/Postdoc positions on Linguistically Motivated Language Models (LMLM)
by Rob van der Goot 12 Mar '26

12 Mar '26

Dear Corpora list, I am looking for applicants for two fully funded PhD/postdoc positions for 3 years starting ~September 2026. Project description: LMLM proposes to build Linguistically Motivated Language Models (LMs). This involves adapting both the training regime and the LM architecture to incorporate different linguistic levels. The hypothesis is that this will lead to mitigation of shortcut learning and, in turn, more reliable LMs. The project will start on the lower levels, investigating how internal structures of words can be used in LMs, followed by words and the syntax level. There will be a strong focus on evaluation, incorporating both standard metrics and benchmarks as well as linguistically oriented and compositionality benchmarks. The successful candidate(s) will be part of the NLPnorth research group in the Data Science section of ITU, and are also encouraged to become affiliated with the AI Pioneer center. They will be supervised by me and a co-supervisor which is selected on a per-candidate basis. LMLM is funded by Carlsberg (https://www.carlsbergfondet.dk/en/what-we-have-funded/cf25-1861/). More information is available on: https://candidate.hr-manager.net/ApplicationInit.aspx?cid=119&ProjectId=181… , and feel free to contact me with any questions. Best, Rob (https://robvanderg.github.io/)
