[First CFP] CHOMPS Workshop colocated with EACL 2027
by Aman Sinha 13 Oct '26

13 Oct '26

CHOMPS – Second Workshop on Confabulation, Hallucinations, & Overgeneration in Multilingual & Precision-critical Scenarios (with our apologies for cross-posting) Venue: EACL 2027 (https://2027.eacl.org/), Athens, Greece Date: 9-14th March 2027 (TBC) Workshop website: https://chomps-workshop.github.io/ * Description * Large Language Models (LLMs) are becoming increasingly integrated into our everyday lives, but their tendency to produce hallucinations remains a major obstacle to their reliable use. LLMs frequently generate confident-sounding falsehoods that can be costly to verify, while their probabilistic nature makes preventing ungrounded outputs particularly challenging. These behaviors undermine trust, especially in precision-critical domains and under-resourced languages. Developing solutions that account for the diverse contexts in which LLMs are deployed is therefore essential to building more reliable and inclusive language technologies. The second iteration of the CHOMPS workshop will continue fostering discussion on hallucinations, confabulations, and overgeneration in LLMs, bringing together researchers and practitioners to explore their causes, consequences, and potential mitigation strategies. This year, we particularly welcome work on hallucination detection, output controllability and the mitigation of overgeneration, and factual alignment in multilingual and high-risk applications, with a special emphasis on challenges in the medical domain. Our goal is to bridge empirical research and real-world needs, advancing language technologies that are both trustworthy and fit for purpose. * Workshop topics * We invite submissions on, but not limited to, the following topics: - Metrics, benchmarks, and tools for hallucination detection - Factuality challenges in precision-critical and domain-specific applications, particularly medical, legal, and biotech settings - Hallucination mitigation strategies during inference and model training - Output controllability and approaches to reducing overgeneration - Hallucinatory and confabulatory behaviors in cross-lingual and multilingual settings - Factual alignment and reliability in under-resourced languages - Hallucinations in language and multimodal models (vision, text, and speech) - Medical-domain hallucinations, their evaluation, and their real-world consequences - Perspectives and case studies from other disciplines * Invited speakers * - Isabelle Augenstein, University of Copenhagen, Denmark - Iacer Calixto, University of Amsterdam, Netherlands * Submission details * The workshop is designed with a widely inclusive submission policy so as to foster as vibrant a discussion as possible. - Archival or non-archival submissions may consist of up to 8 pages (long) or 4 pages (short) of content. - Dissemination submissions may consist of up to 1 page of content. On acceptance, authors may add one additional page to accommodate changes suggested by the reviewers. Please use the ACL style templates available here: https://github.com/acl-org/acl-style-files The submissions need to be done in PDF format via: (a) via Direct submission (TBA) (b) via ARR commitment (TBA) * Shared Task: SHROOM-Visions 2.0 * Building on the success of SHROOM-Visions at UncertaiNLP 2026<https://helsinki-nlp.github.io/shroom/2026>, SHROOM-Visions 2.0 is coming to EACL 2027, co-located with CHOMPS! This edition poses a key question: Can your hallucination detector generalize to entirely unseen languages and domains? More details will follow soon. To participate, please register here: https://forms.gle/h2BfwdCFawDNCMNQ6 Visit the official CHOMPS website<https://chomps-workshop.github.io/> for more updates! * Important dates * First call for papers: October 13, 2026 Second call for papers: November 13, 2026 Paper submission deadline: December 15, 2026 Direct ARR commitment: December 22, 2026 Author notification: January 5, 2027 Camera-Ready due: January 19, 2027 Workshop date: March 9-14, 2027 (TBC) * Contact * For questions, please send an email to chomps-eacl2027(a)googlegroups.com<mailto:chomps-eacl2027@googlegroups.com> or contact one of the workshop chairs: - Aman Sinha, Université de Genève, aman.sinha(a)unige.ch<mailto:aman.sinha@unige.ch> - Chuyuan Li, University of Grenoble-Alps, chuyuan.li(a)univ-grenoble-alpes.fr<mailto:chuyuan.li@univ-grenoble-alpes.fr> - Raúl Vázquez, University of Helsinki, raul.vazquez(a)helsinki.fi<mailto:raul.vazquez@helsinki.fi> - Boya Zhang, Université de Genève, boya.zhang(a)unige.ch<mailto:boya.zhang@unige.ch>

2 PhD positions at Saarland University
by Vera Demberg 10 Oct '26

10 Oct '26

The group of Vera Demberg <https://www.uni-saarland.de/lehrstuhl/demberg.html> invites applications for 2 PhD positions at Saarland University (starting from Jan 2027 or soon thereafter, for 3 years with possible contract extension). The PhD topics are: *Individualised AI Assistants for Software Comprehension* This position aims to make AI coding assistants adaptive to individual developers rather than one-size-fits-all. Using behavioural, eye-tracking, and EEG data, the doctoral researcher will build interpretable models that group developers by how they comprehend code and relate these groups to factors such as experience and working memory. These models will then drive controllable, faithful generation of code, tests, and explanations, drawing on the Rational Speech Acts framework, retrieval-augmented grounding, and real-time gaze and EEG signals. See the full ad for more details and application info: https://www.uni-saarland.de/fileadmin/upload/verwaltung/stellen/Wissenschaf… * Cooperative User Interfaces as Rational Agents* This position develops LLM agents that reason explicitly about what a specific user knows and communicate accordingly, grounded in personal knowledge bases (PKBs) that represent a user's knowledge and beliefs. The doctoral researcher will study how background knowledge shapes interpretation, build knowledge-graph-augmented LLMs that predict how a text will be understood, and use the Rational Speech Acts framework to generate messages that fill relevant knowledge gaps. Mechanistic interpretability and activation steering will be used to test and strengthen how reliably LLMs rely on PKB information rather than their built-in knowledge. See the full ad for more details and application info: https://www.uni-saarland.de/fileadmin/upload/verwaltung/stellen/Wissenschaf… If you have further questions, please email Vera Demberg <demberg(a)lst.uni-saarland.de> <mailto:demberg@lst.uni-saarland.de>.

COLING 2027: Final Call for Papers
by Joakim Nivre 09 Oct '26

09 Oct '26

COLING 2027: Final Call for Papers Website: https://2027.coling-iccl.org/ The 32nd International Conference on Computational Linguistics (COLING 2027) will take place in Macau, China, May 9-14 2027. COLING 2027 invites the submission of long and short papers featuring substantial, original, and unpublished research in all aspects of computational linguistics and natural language processing. Relevant topics include, but are not limited to, the following areas: * Benchmarking and Evaluation * Computational Cognitive Modeling and Psycholinguistics * Computational Social Science and Sociolinguistics * Cross-lingual and Multilingual NLP (including Machine Translation) * Dialogue and Interactive Systems * NLP for Digital Humanities and Cultural Analytics * Discourse and Pragmatics * Ethics, Bias, Fairness, Alignment and Security * Human-AI Interaction and Social Impact of AI systems (including User Studies) * Information Extraction and Retrieval * Interpretability and Analysis of NLP Models * Knowledge-based NLP and Reasoning * Language Acquisition, Learning and Evolution * Language Diversity and NLP for Low-resourced/Less-studied Languages * Language Modeling, including Novel Architectures * Language Resources * Linguistic Theories and Language Modeling for Linguistic Insights * Machine Learning, including Resource-efficiency and Explainability * Agent-based LLM systems * Morphology and Syntax: Segmentation, Tagging, Chunking and Parsing * Multimodality and Language Grounding to Vision, Robotics and Beyond * Natural Language Generation, Summarization and Simplification * NLP and LLM Applications * Phonology and Speech: Recognition, Synthesis, Spoken Language Modeling * Semantics: Lexical and Sentence-Level * Sentiment Analysis, Opinion and Argument Mining, Offensive Language Detection Special Theme: NLP for Linguistics The scientific study of language, linguistics, is a broad field of research that aims to understand the many facets of natural language, across the millions of varieties spoken and used around the globe, including its acquisition, evolution, and relation to social structures and the human mind. A long-standing question in linguistic research is how to model the ubiquitous variation and diversity found within and across languages and language communities, as well as underlying universals and linguistic typology. Historically, computational linguistics and NLP have been closely connected to the scientific study of language, with mutual influence and exchange of ideas, but this connection has weakened over time as NLP has become increasingly reliant on data-intensive methods and focused on applications rather than linguistic insights. The development of LLMs has further amplified this divergence, reinforcing the emphasis on well-resourced languages, commercial use cases, and a narrow set of modeling approaches (transformers), at the expense of linguistic and social diversity and with less emphasis on scientific goals. Recently, a growing body of work in computational linguistics has attempted to narrow the gap between computational language modeling and linguistics, although so far mainly by using data and concepts from linguistics to analyze and evaluate LLMs, rather than to understand language itself. The COLING 2027 special theme, NLP for Linguistics, invites papers that explore the use of NLP and LLMs to advance linguistic research, with a particular focus on linguistic diversity. Instead of asking what linguistics can do for NLP, we encourage the complementary perspective: what can NLP do for the scientific analysis and modeling of language as spoken by humans around the globe? Of special importance is research that explores under-researched languages and linguistic phenomena, investigates the needs of underrepresented groups and communities of speakers, and advances our understanding of how current NLP models can contribute to the scientific study of language and linguistic diversity. Furthermore, the theme track explicitly invites papers that take a critical scientific perspective on current NLP technology, reflect on potential limitations of existing models, or propose new NLP-based methods for the scientific study of language. Submission Details All papers must be submitted through ACL Rolling Review (ARR). The latest possible submission time is the ARR 2026 October cycle, but papers that have already received reviews and a meta-review from ARR in earlier cycles can also be committed to COLING 2027. Please note that the October ARR cycle is shared between COLING 2027 and NAACL 2027 and that authors will be able to choose which conference they want to commit their paper to (only) after the meta-reviews have been released. COLING 2027 invites the submission of long papers of up to eight (8) pages and short papers of up to four (4) pages. These page limits only apply to the main body of the paper. At the end of the paper (after the conclusion but before the references), there must be a mandatory section discussing limitations and, optionally, a section on ethical considerations. Papers can include an unlimited number of pages of references and an unlimited appendix. Authors should follow the guidelines on the ARR website (https://aclrollingreview.org/), where templates are also available. Special theme papers: The special theme can only be selected when committing to COLING 2027 after the meta-review stage. For the first submission to ARR, just choose the best fit among the standard tracks. QDLCA27 Pre-conference Workshop: Research Infrastructures, Methods, and Annotation for Quantitative Diachronic Linguistics
by Andrea Farina 08 Oct '26

08 Oct '26

The QDLCA27 pre-conference workshop, organised by Dr Andrea Farina (King's College London), is a satellite event of the Quantitative Diachronic Linguistics and Cultural Analytics 2027 (QDLCA27) conference<https://www.kcl.ac.uk/events/quantitative-diachronic-linguistics-and-cultur…>. The workshop will take place from Monday 11 (afternoon) to Wednesday 13 (morning) January 2027. It is supported by a CLARIN<https://www.clarin.eu/>-funded initiative (Days 1–2) and by the COALA – Computational Corpus Annotation for Quantitative Analysis of Latin Lexical Semantics<https://coala.er.kcl.ac.uk/about/?utm_source=chatgpt.com> project (Day 3), which also underpins the organisation of QDLCA27. Bringing together researchers interested in digital resources, computational methods, and linguistic annotation, the workshop is designed to provide participants with methodological knowledge and practical experience in the quantitative study of language change, while fostering collaboration across the historical linguistics, corpus linguistics, computational linguistics, and digital humanities communities. The increasing availability of digitised texts, linguistic resources, and computational tools has transformed research in historical linguistics. However, making effective use of these opportunities requires a clear understanding of how data are created, structured, annotated, and analysed. This workshop addresses key challenges in quantitative diachronic research, including the use of research infrastructures, the management and interpretation of historical datasets, annotation methodologies, and the development of reproducible workflows. The first two days of the workshop focus on research infrastructures, tools, and methodological approaches for quantitative diachronic linguistics. Participants will explore how digital resources and computational methods can support research on language variation and change, while also discussing practical challenges related to data access, the design and application of linguistic annotation schemes, comparability, and analysis. Through practical activities, participants will be introduced to the principles and practices of linguistic annotation and will gain hands-on experience in annotating historical language data, including considering how to define annotation categories, apply annotation schemes, and deal with ambiguity and competing analyses. They will also explore how annotated data can be leveraged for quantitative analysis and for investigating patterns of linguistic variation and change. The workshop includes opportunities for participants to discuss their own research interests and datasets, fostering exchange among researchers working with different languages, periods, and methodological approaches. Confirmed invited speakers are Prof Marco Passarotti (Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore) and Dr Megan Bushnell (University of Oxford), who will share perspectives on computational approaches, research infrastructures, and digital resources for the study of historical language data. The workshop is aimed primarily at PhD students and early career researchers who wish to develop their understanding of how to design and apply linguistic annotation and how annotated resources can support quantitative analyses of language change. It is suitable for researchers in historical linguistics, corpus linguistics, computational linguistics, and digital humanities, including those who are beginning to integrate computational methods into their work. The workshop aims to equip participants with practical as well as conceptual foundations needed to engage critically and creatively with quantitative approaches to diachronic linguistics, from the creation and annotation of historical datasets through to their quantitative analysis. The workshop also builds on the broader research community developed through the seminar series Data in Historical Linguistics<https://datainhistoricallinguistics.wordpress.com/> and is part of the activities of the King's Linguistics Network<https://www.kcl.ac.uk/research/kln>. Together, these initiatives promote dialogue on the role of digital data, computational approaches, and quantitative methods in advancing research on language history and linguistics more broadly. Registration and expressions of interest Participation in the workshop is free, but places are limited and capped to 20. Researchers interested in attending are invited to submit an expression of interest by 31 October 2026 through the registration form below. Applicants will be asked to provide a short cover letter explaining their research interests and reasons for wishing to participate. https://forms.gle/H2DjTn7DaKcM8CXZ7 Applicants will be informed of the outcome of their application during the following week.
