*** Second Call for Tutorial Proposals *** 19th IEEE eScience Conference (eScience 2023) October 9-13, 2023, St. Raphael Resort, Limassol, Cyprus https://www.escience-conference.org/2023/ The 19th IEEE eScience Conference will be held in Limassol, Cyprus on October 9-13, 2023. eScience 2023 welcomes proposals for tutorials to be held with the main conference October 9-10 2023. The eScience 2023 Tutorial Program is intended to teach new and/or state-of-the art tools and techniques relevant to the eScience audience, disseminate information to conference attendees on recently emerging topics and trends, or provide surveys and overviews of related digital technologies. We encourage all submissions that fall in the area of the conference, and particularly those that have a practical (hands-on) component that helps attendees learn new technologies in eScience. We also encourage submissions that disseminate new technologies in eScience to a more diverse audience. TUTORIAL SUBMISSION GUIDELINES Tutorial proposals should be submitted per email as a single pdf file; the file should include (1) a cover sheet and (2) an extended abstract. DisCoTEX is the first shared task focused on modeling discourse coherence for Italian real-word texts. Coherence is a key property of any well-organized text and it plays a fundamental role in human discourse processing as well as in a number of NLP applications. Inspired by previous literature on coherence modeling, the DisCoTEX task will be articulated into two subtasks: 1. Last sentence classification: this is conceived as a binary classification task. Specifically, given a short textual passage and an individual sentence, participants will be asked to predict whether the sentence follows or not, thus joining it to the passage gives out a coherent or incoherent passage. 2. Human score prediction: this is conceived as a regression task in which participants will be asked to predict the average coherence score assigned by human raters to short passages (either in their original or modified version). Participants are free to participate in either one of them or both. Given the novelty of the task and the crucial role that coherence modeling plays in a variety of application scenarios, we expect to attract groups from communities working on distinct fields, such as automatic essay scoring, readability assessment and document summarization. After three successful editions in the Netherlands, the 4th edition is planned on 20 June 2023, just before IWCS 2023 (Internation Conference on Computational Semantics). As invited speakers we are welcoming Wataru Uegaki (University of Edinburgh) and Todor Koev (Universit��t Konstanz). InqBnB4 invites submissions on original and unpublished research focusing on the properties of inquisitive content. We are open to several approaches: theoretical questions, formal models, empirical work, statistical or neural models. It is the third iteration of a cross-formalism shared task on discourse analysis, with three subtasks: * Task 1: discourse segmentation * Task 2: connective identification * Task 3: relation classification We will provide training, development and test datasets from all available languages in RST, SDRT, PDTB and Discourse Dependencies using a uniform format. Because different corpora, languages, and frameworks use different guidelines, the shared task will promote the design of flexible methods for dealing with various guidelines, and will help to push forward the discussion of converging standards for discourse units, discourse relations and discourse markers. For datasets which have treebanks, we will evaluate segmentation in two different scenarios: with and without gold syntax. An automatically parsed version is provided for all corpora without a gold parse. Converting .doc to docx.

Hello all, does anybody know of a programme or other tool to convert .doc format into .docx format? I'm using AntFileConverter to transform my files into .txt format to be able to create a corpora, but AntFileConverter only seems to be working with .docx format. Thanks! Laura

Conference aims and topics The workshop aims to follow through the topics discussed during DiSLiDaS 2022 (https://dislidas.mozajka.co/?page_id=211) and to gather current research advances in discourse analysis and representation, in the context of multilinguality, from a linguistic and computational perspective. We invite submissions addressing challenges such as interoperability, linguistic linked open data (LLOD), and language processing and analysis. The workshop topics are the following (but not limited to): ● Discourse and dialogue annotation: Parsing and representation across languages and frameworks ● Discourse markers and discourse relations (RST, PDTB, SDRT): Identification, prediction and extraction ● Attitudes discovery and interpretation in Discourse: Appraisal and sentiment ● Effects of multimodality on discourse interpretation: Intonation, gesture and text ● Interoperability for Multilingual language data: Challenges of rich and distributed data ● Discourse data and machine learning: Methods and tools Discourse comprises a wide variety of linguistic phenomena, such as discourse markers, discourse relations, and speaker attitude, which have been largely studied by different communities of practice from Linguistics and Computation, rendering several theoretical frameworks (for instance, RST, SDRT, PDTB, for discourse relations; appraisal theory for sentiment analysis,...), and technological approaches, such as transformer models, embeddings and alike. Nonetheless, there are open issues concerning interoperability, multilinguality, and language processing, in particular, the existence of different annotation schemas, disambiguation, lack of training data for machine learning, scarcity of effective language phenomena detection and interpretation methods, diverse vocabularies, insufficient multilingual parallel corpora of non-dialogue and dialogue, initial stages of exploration of multimodality. Discourse research is one of the central research areas of natural language processing (NLP) too. NLP research focuses on the formalisation, identification and discovery of semantic phenomena, dialogue exchange structure, and text coherence. Some of the technological approaches of NLP include the use of transformer models, word embeddings, linguistic linked open data, the constitution of aligned multilingual corpora, vocabularies of language phenomena and alike. Computational discourse explores the evidence that language consists not only of placing words in the right order but also of detecting and interpreting the meaning and deeper textual relations and organising ideas into a logical flow. The linguistic approaches study language phenomena referring to coherence and cohesiveness of discourse, lexical, phrasal, syntactic, semantic and pragmatic means to express discourse relations, represent their roles and build language resources for them. Despite all the advances, there are still plenty of unresolved problems related to interoperability, multilinguality, and language processing. With the growth of the Semantic Web and Linguistic Linked Data, interoperability is key to reading, interpreting and adopting language resources. The existence of different annotation schemas to encode discourse relations constitutes a problem for data exchange and reuse and for theoretical consistency. The treatment of multilinguality is also complicated because of the insufficiency of multilingual parallel corpora of collections of non-dialogue and dialogue texts, which would allow systematic contrastive studies. As to language processing, the lack of training data for machine learning, coupled with the scarcity of effective language phenomena detection and interpretation methods, the coexistence of diverse vocabularies, and the minimal attention to the contribution of the tone of voice, intonation, gestures to the meaning and the informative value of discourse elements make the task of discourse processing still very challenging. The workshop intends to be a discussion forum for researchers interested in addressing the aforementioned challenges and advancing the state-of-art in discourse studies and linguistic data science. Programme The Scientific Programme will include one invited talk and oral presentations. All submission lengths are given including references. Accepted submissions will be published by ACL in an open-access conference proceedings volume, free of charge for authors. The SD-LLOD datathon has the main goal of providing practical knowledge to people from industry and academia in the application of Linked Open Data technology to Linguistics and Language Technology. The ultimate goal is to enable participants to migrate their own (or other’s) linguistic data and publish them as Linked Data on the Web and/or develop applications on top of Linguistic Linked Data (LLD). One of the main focus points this year will be the use ofdeep learning and neural approaches to/from LLD. This datathon series is unique in its topic worldwide and continues from the success of the previous editions in 2015 and 2017 in Cercedilla (Spain), 2019 in Dagstuhl (Germany), and 2022 in Cercedilla again. During the datathon, participants will be able to: * Generate their own Linguistic Linked Data from existing data sources, using visual toolslike VocBench and community standards like OntoLex lemon * Applysemantic technologies(linked data, knowledge graphs, RDF, SPARQL) to the field of language resources and learn about their benefits and applications for specific use cases, particularly those involving multilingual and/or multimodal aspects. * Explore the potential use of embeddings, machine learning, and deep learningtechniques in combination with Linguistic Linked Data. For instance: * Neural machine translation from Natural Language to SPARQL * Generating natural language from knowledge graphs * Acquiring relations with neural language models The program of the summer datathon will contain three types of sessions: 1. Seminars to explain theoretical aspects and discuss selected topics. 2. Hands-on sessionsto introduce the basic foundations of each topic, method, and technique, which participants will apply directly through different practical assignments. 3. Datathon sessions,where participants will work, in groups of 3-5, on miniprojects and where they will apply what they have learned, involving the generation and/or use of Linguistic Linked Data. Participants are invited to propose a “miniproject” related to the topics of the datathon, which might include some datasets for their conversion into linked data. In this edition, we particularly encourage miniprojects that involve interaction with machine learning, deep learning, or embeddings techniques. A selection of proposals will form the basis for the miniprojects which the participants will work on during the datathon sessions. Participants who do not propose a miniproject, or whose miniproject is not selected, will be able to join another miniproject. There will be an award for the best miniproject. Chris led the Consortium for over 25 years, guiding its evolution from a small data repository and research hub to a prominent global data center. An accomplished linguist, computer scientist, and a well-read humanist, Chris embodied the best qualities for executing the wide range of duties demanded by his leadership role. He was a valued colleague and friend and will be sorely missed. All are welcome to visit our remembrance page<https://www.ldc.upenn.edu/christopher-cieri-1963-2023> for Chris. ________________________________ New publications: Penn Korean Universal Dependency Treebank<https://catalog.ldc.upenn.edu/LDC2023T05> contains 5010 sentences and 132,041 tokens annotated in dependency format under the Universal Dependencies framework<https://universaldependencies.org/>. It is a conversion of Korean Treebank Annotations Version 2.0 (LDC2006T09)<https://catalog.ldc.upenn.edu/LDC2006T09>, which was produced in constituency format. The source text is newswire stories from LDC's Korean Press Agency collection contained in Korean Newswire (LDC2000T45)<https://catalog.ldc.upenn.edu/LDC2000T45>. Sentences were automatically converted for dependency annotation; the output was manually checked. The corpus contains 112 files in CoNLL-U format<https://universaldependencies.org/format.html>, the Universal Dependencies standard, with a mapping to their counterpart in LDC2006T09. 2023 members can access this corpus through their LDC accounts. Non-members may license this data for a fee. * DEFT English Light and Rich ERE Annotation<https://catalog.ldc.upenn.edu/LDC2023T04> was developed by LDC and consists of 1190 English discussion forum, newswire, and proxy documents annotated for entities, relations, and events (ERE). Light ERE annotation labels entity mentions for the target set of entity, relation, and event types between and among those entities, including coreference. Rich ERE annotation expands types and tagging in the entities, relations, and events annotation tasks and replaces strict event coreference with a more loosely defined event hopper annotation. 902 documents were annotated following Light ERE annotation guidelines. 288 documents were labeled with Rich ERE annotation in a second pass after being annotated for Light ERE. The source data consists of English discussion forum web text collected by LDC for the DARPA BOLT program and contained in BOLT English Discussion Forums (LDC2017T11)<https://catalog.ldc.upenn.edu/LDC2017T11>; newswire documents published in various data sets released in the TAC KBP project (Text Analysis Conference Knowledge Base Population)<https://www.ldc.upenn.edu/collaborations/past-projects/tac-kbp>; and proxy documents intended to mimic government analysis reports of newswire content published in DEFT Narrative Text (LDC2016T07)<https://catalog.ldc.upenn.edu/LDC2016T07>. 2023 members can access this corpus through their LDC accounts.
