Workshop description The upcoming CMLC meeting continues the successful series of “Challenges in the management of large corpora” events, previously hosted at LREC (since 2012) and CL (since 2015) conferences. As in the previous meetings, we wish to explore common areas of interest across a range of issues in language resource management, corpus linguistics, natural language processing, and data science. Large textual datasets require careful design, collection, cleaning, encoding, annotation, storage, retrieval, and curation to be of use for a wide range of research questions and to users across a number of disciplines. A growing number of national and other very large corpora are being made available, many historical archives are being digitised, numerous publishing houses are opening their textual assets for text mining, and many billions of words can be quickly sourced from the web and online social media. A number of key themes and questions emerge of interest to the contributing research communities: (a) what can be done to deal with IPR and data protection issues? (b) what sampling techniques can we apply? (c) what quality issues should we be aware of? (d) what infrastructures and frameworks are being developed for the efficient storage, annotation, analysis and retrieval of large datasets? (e) what affordances do visualisation techniques offer for the exploratory analysis approaches of corpora? (f) what kinds of APIs or other means of access would make the corpus data as widely usable as possible without interfering with legal restrictions? (g) how to guarantee that corpus data remain available and usable in a sustainable way? Motivation and topics of interest This year’s event will cover the entire range of the standard CMLC themes, with some new additions: * New and hot topics o Language Models + What linguistic insights can we gain by post-hoc language model analysis in the age of ChatGPT? + How can we avoid the proliferation of stereotypes in terms of both linguistic surface form and content when using language models for linguistic analysis? o Societal and legal issues relevant for corpora and studies + political and sociological balance ○ social media bubbles, hate speech and fake news + proliferation of stereotypes via corpora and language models + corpora as archives of the past: evolution in mentalities or laws, personality rights o How to make corpora as accessible as possible despite big data issues, application heterogeneity, and IPR issues + What are the most interesting APIs and libraries to build, analyse and access very large corpora? + How can we get us researchers to use existing research tools, infrastructures, libraries and APIs in research and teaching? * Linguistic content challenges o Dealing with the variety of language resources: multilinguality, historical texts, noisy OCR texts, user-generated content, etc. o Integration of human computation (crowdsourcing) and automatic annotation o Quality management of annotations * Technical challenges o Storage and retrieval solutions for big textual data corpora: primary data, metadata, and annotation data o Scalable and efficient NLP tooling for annotating and analysing large datasets: distributed and GPGPU computing; using big data analysis frameworks for language processing o Dealing with streaming (e.g. Social Media) and rapidly changing underlying data * Exploitation challenges o Legal and privacy issues o Query languages, data models, and standardisation o Licensing models of open and closed data, coping with intellectual property restrictions o Innovative approaches for aggregation and visualisation of text analytics In the tradition of CMLC, we invite reports on national corpus initiatives; submitters of these reports should be prepared to present a poster along with a short presentation. Proposed tasks can be in the area of core NLG, or in other research areas in which language is generated. Examples include, but are not limited to: data-to-text NLG, text-to-text generation (including MT and summarisation), combining core NLG and MT, combining core NLG and text summarisation, NLG quality estimation, NLG evaluation metrics, and/or generating language from heterogeneous data, including image and video. The Generation Challenges (GenChal) are an umbrella event designed to bring together a variety of shared-task efforts that involve the generation of natural language. This year, Generation Challenges will be held during a special session at the 16th International Conference on Natural Language Generation (INLG 2023 <https://inlg2023.github.io/>), scheduled on September 11-15 2023. The session will follow the format of previous GenChal results sessions, with presentations of results by the organisers of the generation challenges that are currently running, a poster session for task participants to present their submissions, as well as presentations of proposals for new shared tasks in the Task Proposals Track, and discussion sessions. Error message on UAM Corpus Tool :/

Hello everyone, I am looking for advice on UAM Corpus Tool. When I try to use the 'Menu-driven search' function on UAMCT3.3m I get this error message: Error: Program crashed during download of tag param file and after closing that window: Error: Problem with Search.showInstance additionally, in the Opening CQL Search Window: Setting up search... Starting search of 2 documents ('+' for each document) ++Program crashed: object of type 'NoneType' has no len() I have also tried with UAMCT6.2j (which version do you suggest using?) and I got a different error message: Error: Error: ERROR in parsing segment spec: unknown feature or layer name: Entity I think I have TreeTagger correctly installed because it works when I run it from the Command Prompt. TESTLINK evaluation task [apologies for cross-posting] Call for participation We invite you to participate in the TESTLINK task on the extraction of relations from clinical cases. The task mainly consists in identifying test results and measurements and linking them to the textual mentions of the laboratory tests and measurements from which they were obtained. Biopsia (test) – negativa (result) TESTLINK (https://e3c.fbk.eu/testlinkiberlef) is organised in the context of IberLEF 2023 and proposes three different challenges: two tasks on monolingual datasets in Spanish and Basque and a third one requiring a multilingual approach. The evaluation task has been set up in Codalab ( https://codalab.lisn.upsaclay.fr/competitions/12622). Participants are invited to submit their annotated file for evaluation through it. Each team is allowed to submit 2 runs. Assessment will be performed manually and the results will be posted and notified to the participants at the end of the evaluation period. The datasets of all the challenges are based on the European Clinical Case Corpus (E3C), which consists of clinical cases in five European languages and is freely available (CC-BY-NC-4.0). Dear all, Our Chair of Multilingual Computational Linguistics is offering a total of three doctoral and three post-doctoral positions. All doctoral positions are for three years, with a possibility of extension by one more year. Research topics include historical linguistics, linguistic typology and cognitive linguistics / psycholinguistics. Deadline for application is May 20. Two of the three post-doc positions are for three years and do not involve teaching. Topics include linguistic typology and historical linguistics. Deadline for application is May 20. The last post-doc position is for an assistant of the chair, which comes with a higher pay grade in the German system (Akademische Rat) and involves teaching duties of five hours per week during semester times. This position is for three years, with a possible extension by three more years. Major background for the candidates is machine learning / computational linguistics whereas dealing with multilingual data is a plus. The 1st Workshop on Counter Speech for Online Abuse: A workshop for creating, investigating and improving tools for producing and evaluating counter speech. Hate speech and abusive and toxic language are prevalent in online spaces. For example, a 2019 survey shows that in the UK 30-40% of people have experienced online abuse, and platforms like Facebook bring down millions of harmful posts every year, with the help of AI tools. While removal of such content can immediately reduce the quantity of harmful messages, it can bring about accusations of censorship and may not be effective at curbing hate in the long term. An alternative approach is to reply with counter speech, i.e. targeted responses aimed at refuting the hateful language using thoughtful and cogent reasons, and fact-bound arguments. This has been shown to be effective in influencing the behaviour of both the perpetrators of abuse and bystanders that witness the interactions, as well as providing support to victims. The sheer amount of social media data shared online on a daily basis means that hate mitigation, using counter speech, requires reliable, efficient and scalable tools. Recently, efforts have been made to curate hate countering datasets and automate the production of counter speech. However, this research field is still in its infancy, and many questions remain open regarding the most effective approaches and methods to take, as well as how to evaluate them. This first multidisciplinary workshop aims to bring together researchers from diverse backgrounds such as computer science and the social sciences, as well as policy makers and other stakeholders to attempt to understand how counter speech is currently used to tackle abuse by individuals, activists and organisations, how Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Generation (NLG) can be applied to produce counter narratives, and the implications of using large language models for this task. It will also address, but not be limited to, the questions of how to evaluate and measure the impacts of counter speech, the importance of expert knowledge from civil society in the development of counter speech datasets and taxonomies, and how to ensure fairness and mitigate the biases present in language models when generating counter speech. Topics We invite papers (long and short) on a wide range of topics, including but not limited to: • Models and methods for generating counter speech; • Dialogue agents employing counter speech to address hateful inputs, directed towards other people or the AI itself; • Human and automatic evaluation methods of counter speech tools; • Multidisciplinary studies including different perspectives on the topic such as from computer science, social science, NGOs and stakeholders; • Development of datasets and taxonomy for counter speech; • Potentials and limitations (e.g., fairness, biases) of using large language models for generating counter speech; • Social impact and empirical studies of counter speech on social media, including investigating the effectiveness and consequences on users of employing counter speech to fight online hate • Proposals for future research on counter speech, and/or preliminary results of studies in this field We accept three types of submissions: * Regular research papers – long (8 pages) or short (4 pages); * Non-archival submissions: like research papers, but will not be included in the proceedings; * Research communications: 2-4 page abstracts summarising relevant research published elsewhere.
