A resource for studying modality in diachrony: release of the WoPoss Latin corpus and its user-friendly search interface
by DELL'ORO Francesca 29 Aug '22

29 Aug '22

Dear all, We are happy to inform you that we have recently released a sample of the WoPoss corpus – an annotated corpus for the investigation of the diachrony of modality in Latin – together with a user-friendly interface to query it. WoPoss – A World of Possibilities. Modal pathways over an extra-long period of time: the diachrony of modality in the Latin language – is a project that aims at setting up and annotating in a fine-grained way a balanced corpus of Latin texts from the 3rd c. BCE to the 7th c. CE in order to investigate the evolution of lexical and morphological modal markers according to dedicated Guidelines<https://zenodo.org/record/6417878#.YwKJ8-xBzAM>. A sample of the annotated corpus is now available and the modal passages can be queried at woposs.unine.ch/form.html<https://woposs.unine.ch/form.html> More annotated texts will be added in the next few months. If you have any query, we are happy to answer. WoPoss is a project funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (project no. PP0001_176778). [QPP++] 3rd CfP Query Performance Prediction and Its Evaluation in New Tasks @ CIKM 2022
by Guglielmo Faggioli 29 Aug '22

29 Aug '22

Query Performance Prediction (QPP) is currently primarily used for ad-hoc retrieval tasks. The Information Retrieval (IR) field is reaching new heights thanks to recent advances in large language models and neural networks, as well as emerging new ways of searching, such as conversational search. Such advancements are quickly spreading to adjacent research areas, including QPP, necessitating a reconsideration of how we perform and evaluate QPP. Important Dates --------------------- Submission deadline: September 2, 2022 Notification of acceptance: September 27, 2022 Camera ready: October 06, 2022 Conference days: October 17-20, 2022 Workshop day: October 21, 2022 Call for Papers ------------------- This workshop aims at stimulating discussion on three main aspects concerning the future of QPP: What are the emerging QPP challenges posed by new methods and technologies, including but not limited to dense retrieval, contextualized embeddings, and conversational search? How might these new techniques be used to improve the quality of QPP? Can we claim that the current techniques for evaluating QPP are effective in all arising scenarios? Can we envision new evaluation protocols capable of granting generalizability in new domains? We plan to foster the discussion via two focus groups led by the workshop's organizers. The first focus group will identify what possibilities the QPP offers regarding new research models and IR tasks, primary considerations, issues linked to different aspects of the QPP, and the potentialities provided by new tools. The second focus group will gather the community’s concerns and solutions with respect to the QPP evaluation, especially for what concerns emerging domains. Themes and Topics The workshop will focus on the following themes: Query performance prediction applied to new tasks: Can existing QPP techniques be exploited, or which new QPP theories and models need to be devised for new tasks, such as passage-retrieval, Q&A, and conversational search? Query performance prediction exploiting new techniques: How can new technologies, such as contextualized embeddings, large language models, and neural networks be exploited to improve QPP? Evaluation of query performance prediction: How should QPP techniques be evaluated, including best practices, datasets, and resources, and, in particular, should QPP be evaluated the same for different IR tasks? It is possible to submit three main categories of manuscripts to the workshop: Full papers: up to 6 pages. Short papers: up to 3 pages. Discussion papers: up to 3 pages. All manuscripts are expected to address the workshop's themes as mentioned above. Full and short papers should contain innovative ideas and their experimental evaluation. We are also interested in works containing (methodologically sound) preliminary results and incremental endeavours. Discussion papers should include work with or without preliminary results, position papers, and papers describing failures. Such papers should foster the discussion and thus are not required to contain full-fledged results. In this sense, the experimental evaluation of the submitted discussion paper is appreciated but not required. We are also interested in receiving contributions regarding (methodologically sound) failed experiments; since the workshop will focus on new research directions, we consider it necessary also to discuss the reasons and causes of failures. Each manuscript will be peer-reviewed by at least two program committee members Accepted papers will be published online as a volume of the CEUR-WS proceeding series. Extended deadline CfP Third workshop on Resources for African Indigenous Language (RAIL)
by Menno Van Zaanen 26 Aug '22

26 Aug '22

Due to several requests, we have extended the submission deadline to 4 September 2022 Final call for papers Third workshop on Resources for African Indigenous Language (RAIL) https://bit.ly/rail2022 The South African Centre for Digital Language Resources (SADiLaR) is organising the 3rd RAIL workshop in the field of Resources for African Indigenous Languages. This workshop aims to bring together researchers who are interested in showcasing their research and thereby boosting the field of African indigenous languages. This provides an overview of the current state-of-the-art and emphasizes availability of African indigenous language resources, including both data and tools. Additionally, it will allow for information sharing among researchers interested in African indigenous languages and also start discussions on improving the quality and availability of the resources. Many African indigenous languages currently have no or very limited resources available and, additionally, they are often structurally quite different from more well-resourced languages, requiring the development and use of specialized techniques. By bringing together researchers from different fields (e.g., (computational) linguistics, sociolinguistics, language technology) to discuss the development of language resources for African indigenous languages, we hope to boost research in this field. The RAIL workshop is an interdisciplinary platform for researchers working on resources (data collections, tools, etc.) specifically targeted towards African indigenous languages. It aims to create the conditions for the emergence of a scientific community of practice that focuses on data, as well as tools, specifically designed for or applied to indigenous languages found in Africa. Suggested topics include the following: * Digital representations of linguistic structures * Descriptions of corpora or other data sets of African indigenous languages * Building resources for (under resourced) African indigenous languages * Developing and using African indigenous languages in the digital age * Effectiveness of digital technologies for the development of African indigenous languages * Revealing unknown or unpublished existing resources for African indigenous languages * Developing desired resources for African indigenous languages * Improving quality, availability and accessibility of African indigenous language resources The 3rd RAIL workshop 2022 will be co-located with the 10th Southern African Microlinguistics Workshop (https://sites.google.com/nwulettere.co.za/samwop-10/home). This will be an in-person event located in Potchefstroom, South Africa. Registration will be free. RAIL 2022 submission requirements: * RAIL asks for full papers from 4 pages to 8 pages (plus more pages for references if needed), which must strictly follow the Journal of the Digital Humanities Association of Southern Africa style guide (https://upjournals.up.ac.za/index.php/dhasa/libraryFiles/downloadPublic/30 ). * Accepted submissions will be published in JDHASA, the Journal of the Digital Humanities Association of Southern Africa (https://upjournals.up.ac.za/index.php/dhasa/). * Papers will be double blind peer-reviewed and must be submitted through EasyChair (https://easychair.org/my/conference?conf=rail2022).
