About the workshop The evaluation of learning and assessment content has always been a crucial task in the educational domain, but traditional approaches based on human feedback are not always usable in modern educational settings. Indeed, the advent of machine learning models, in particular Large Language Models (LLMs), enabled to quickly and automatically generate large quantities of texts, making human evaluation unfeasible. Still, these texts are used in the educational domain -- e.g., as questions, hints, or even to score and assess students -- and thus the need for accurate and automated techniques for evaluation becomes pressing. This hybrid workshop aims to attract professionals from both academia and the industry, and to to offer an opportunity to discuss which are the common challenges in evaluating learning and assessment content in education. Topics of interest include but are not limited to: - Question evaluation (e.g., in terms of alignment to learning objectives, factual accuracy, language level, cognitive validity, etc.). - Estimation of question statistics (e.g., difficulty, discrimination, response time, etc.). - Evaluation of distractors in Multiple Choice Questions. - Evaluation of reading passages in reading comprehension questions. - Evaluation of lectures and course material. - Evaluation of learning paths (e.g., in terms of prerequisites and topics taught before a specific exam). - Evaluation of educational recommendation systems (e.g., personalised curricula). - Evaluation of hints and scaffolding questions, as well as their adaptation to different students. - Evaluation of automatically generated feedback provided to students. - Evaluation of techniques for automated scoring. - Evaluation of bias in educational content and LLM outputs. Human-in-the-loop approaches are welcome, provided that there is also an automated component in the evaluation and there is a focus on the scalability of the proposed approach. Papers on generation are also very welcome, as long as there is an extensive focus on the evaluation step. The workshop will feature two keynote speakers: - Zachary A. Pardos, Associate Professor of Education at UC Berkeley - Victoria Yaneva, Manager of NLP research at NBME. Work of literature without copyright issues

Dear Colleagues We are currently working on manually translating domain-specific English data to multiple low-resource languages. Literature is one such selected domain. We started with novels in project Gutenberg. However, most of those books are from the 1800's and our translators struggle to comprehend the language used in those books. I would like to know whether there are story books written in modern simple English that are free of copyrights to be used for this task. Regards Surangika

Please find call for papers bellow: === The Third Workshop on NLP Applications to Field Linguistics === Field linguistics plays a crucial role in the development of linguistic theory and universal language modeling, as it provides uncontested, the only way to obtain structural data about the rapidly diminishing diversity of natural languages. The Field matters workshop aims to bring together the urgent needs of field linguists and the vast community of NLP practitioners, developing up-to-date NLP tools for easier, faster, more reliable data collection and annotation. This year we are adding a special track dedicated to the indigenous languages of Thailand and South-East Asia. We encourage you to submit theses on this topic, although general submissions are also welcomed. We are particularly interested in the following topics: - Application of NLP to field linguistics workflow; - The impact, benefits and harms of NLP-assisted fieldwork; - Transfer learning for under-resourced language processing; - The use of fieldwork data to build NLP systems; - Modeling morphology and syntax of typologically diverse languages in the low-resource setting; - Speech processing for under-resourced languages; - Machine-readable field linguistic datasets and computational analysis of field linguistics datasets; - Using technology to preserve culture via language; - Improving ways of interaction with Indigenous communities; - Special track: Indigenous languages of Thailand and South-East Asia. We accept three types of papers: - non-archival submissions: abstracts (2-page) or papers (up to 8-page) that can present already published work or work in progress (note that we accept non-archival submissions even after the main deadline); - short archival submissions: 4-page papers that present new work; - long archival submissions: 8-page papers that present new work. The special track submissions can be either long or short and either archival or non-archival. We offer the following ways of presenting the papers: - the main section; - poster sections. The way a paper will be presented will be determined during the review process. All submissions should be anonymized. We are subjected to the ACL Anonymity Policy. ACL changed its policy for review and citation, and no anonymity period will be required. Dual submissions with the main conference are allowed, but authors must declare dual submission by entering the paper’s main conference submission id. The reviews for the submission for the main conference will be automatically forwarded to the workshop and taken into consideration when your paper is evaluated. Authors of dual-submission papers accepted to the main conference should retract them from the workshop by. Papers posted to preprint servers such as arxiv can be submitted without any restrictions on when they were posted. We look forward to seeing you in Italy! ________________________________ New publications: Call My Net 1<https://catalog.ldc.upenn.edu/LDC2024S05> was developed by LDC and contains 364 hours of conversational telephone speech in four languages (Tagalog, Cebuano, Cantonese, and Mandarin) collected in 2015 from 221 native speakers located in the Philippines and China along with metadata and speaker demographic information. Recordings and data from this collection were used to support the NIST 2016 Speaker Recognition Evaluation<https://www.nist.gov/itl/iad/mig/speaker-recognition-evaluation-2016>. Speakers made 10 telephone calls each to people within their existing social networks, using different handsets and under a variety of noise conditions. Speakers were connected through a robot operator to carry on casual conversations on topics of their choice. All recordings were manually audited to confirm language and speaker requirements. The documentation for this release includes metadata about phone type, noise conditions, and call quality. Speaker demographic information on year of birth, sex, and native language is also included. 2024 members can access this corpus through their LDC accounts. Non-members may license this data for a fee. * Automatic Content Extraction for Portuguese<https://catalog.ldc.upenn.edu/LDC2024T05> was developed at INESC TEC - Instituto de Engenharia de Sistemas e Computadores, Tecnologia e Ciência<https://www.inesctec.pt/en> and consists of automatic Brazilian Portuguese and European Portuguese translations of the English text and annotations in ACE 2005 Multilingual Training Corpus (LDC2006T06)<https://catalog.ldc.upenn.edu/LDC2006T06>. ACE 2005 Multilingual Training Corpus was developed by LDC to support the Automatic Contract Extraction (ACE)<https://www.ldc.upenn.edu/collaborations/past-projects/ace> program, specifically, by providing training data for the 2005 technology evaluation. It contains 1,800 files of mixed genre text in Arabic, English, and Chinese annotated for entities, relations, and events. The objective of the ACE program was to develop automatic content extraction technology to support automatic processing of human language in text form. Text genres included newswire, broadcast news, broadcast conversation, weblog, discussion forums, and conversational telephone speech. For this translation, the English data was partitioned into training, development, and test sets. The documents were split into sentences and each event mention was assigned to its sentence. Source sentences and their annotations were translated into Brazilian Portuguese using Google Translate<https://translate.google.com/> and into European Portuguese using DeepL Translate<https://www.deepl.com/en/translator>. An alignment algorithm and a parallel corpus word aligner were used to handle mismatches between translated annotations and their translated sentences. 2024 members can access this corpus through their LDC account.
