Dear all,
[Apologies for cross-posting]
The Language Technology research unit at the University of Helsinki ("Helsinki-NLP") seeks to recruit one fully funded NLP PhD student for a duration of 3 years, with extension by up to 1 extra year.
The PhD will focus on the role of pretraining data on cross-lingual transfer for factual tasks — whether data available in one language can be leveraged by multilingual LLMs to produce factually correct text in another language, and conversely, whether failure to do so can be leveraged to identify and characterize pre-training data gaps. The PhD will be conducted under the supervision of Jörg Tiedemann and Timothee Mickus; the position is expected to start on January 1st, although adjustments may be possible.
The position will be held within the Helsinki-NLP team (https://blogs.helsinki.fi/language-technology/), focusing on the FLaM project (https://helsinki-nlp.github.io/flam/).
We invite applications from students currently holding a masters in computational linguistics, NLP, machine learning, or any adjacent field and not have been enrolled previously in another PhD programme. Applicants are to send an email to timothee.mickus(a)helsinki.fi and jorg.tiedemann(a)helsinki.fi with the following subject line: “[crosslingual fact transfer, PhD application]”, and must provide the following:
- A curriculum vitae detailing their education (max 1 page)
- The name and email of one reference (ideally a former supervisor, e.g. for a masters’ thesis)
- A research statement (max 500 words), describing how the applicant’s interest aligns with the topic outlined above and what they expect to achieve through the PhD
- Transcript with grades received
Full consideration will be given to applications received before September 30th; the position will remain open until filled. Shortlisted applicants will be contacted directly for an interview.
We emphasize matching research interests during the assessment of applications, and will not factor in quantitative indicators (such as number of publications, etc.), in line with DORA practices.
Please forward this call to anyone who might be interested!
Best regards,
Timothee Mickus

Par-PARSEME - a multilingual shared task on
paraphrasing of idioms
https://unidive.lisn.upsaclay.fr/doku.php?id=other-events:par-parseme
Overview
---------------
The PARSEME and UniDive communities are happy to
introduce the Par-PARSEME, task 4 in
SemEval-2027. It is a follow-up of previous shared
tasks organized by PARSEME.
Par-PARSEME is a shared task whose goal is to
assess systems’ ability to **paraphrase idioms**
in written texts. Idioms, such as a hot dog or to
pull one’s leg, are subsets of multiword
expressions (MWEs), and are combinations of words
exhibiting non-compositional semantics. This makes
them challenging for semantic tasks like
paraphrasing. For instance, a hot dog can be
paraphrased as a bread roll with a hot sausage but
not as #a warm dog or #dog which is hot.
The input for this task is a raw sentence
containing exactly one idiom not explicitly marked
in text. Systems must paraphrase the sentence so
that the original idiom no longer occurs (which
requires idiom identification), but the meaning is
kept. For all details, see the Par-PARSEME website.
Evaluation is done along 2 axes: **performance**
(automatic and manual measures) and **diversity**
(automatic measures).

*Leiden University Centre for Linguistics is organising the 9th edition
of the Using Corpora in Contrastive and Translation Studies conference
series in 2027.*
UCCTS conference is a biennial international conference which was
launched by Richard Xiao in 2008 to provide an international forum for
the exploration of the theoretical and practical issues pertaining to
the creation and use of corpora in contrastive and
translation/interpreting studies.
Since 2008 UCCTS conference series that took place, among other, in
Louvain-la-Neuve (2018), Bertinoro (2021), Poznań (2023) and Hildesheim
(2025) has played a key role in advancing contrastive and translation
studies by giving scholars of the sister disciplines the opportunity to
meet and engage in discussions on research outcomes and ideas on how to
effectively apply, enhance and further develop corpus methods to move
both fields forward. A selection of papers presented at UCCTS appeared
in special issues of journals important in both fields or edited volumes
published, for example, by Routledge or Bloomsbury.
The 9th edition of the UCCTS conference will be held on *9-11th June
2027 in Leiden, the Netherlands*.
The conference is planned to be an on-site event. However, we will try
to also organise virtual presentation options.
*CALL FOR PAPERS*
UCCTS conference series are meant to bring together researchers who
collect, annotate, analyze corpora and/or use them to inform contrastive
linguistics and translation theory and/or develop corpus-informed tools
(in foreign language teaching, language testing and quality assessment,
translation pedagogy, computer-aided/machine translation or other
related NLP domains). We invite original submissions that open to
various topics within empirical contrastive linguistics and translation
studies (see below). We welcome interdisciplinary contributions that
combine corpus data with other types of empirical data (e.g. experiment)
and allow for an interplay between different methods and data types.
Moreover, we encourage contributions applying information and
computational technologies including Large Language Models (LLMs).
*Conference topics* include:
* Quantitative approaches in corpus-based contrastive and
translation/interpreting studies, in particular with
multi-methodological designs (corpus-based, corpus-driven,
experimental) and advanced statistical modeling
* Computational methods derived from NLP and data mining (e.g.
computational semantics, pragmatics) applied to contrastive
linguistics and translation studies
* LLMs for contrastive linguistics and translation research (data
annotation, data analysis, etc.)
* Method and data triangulation: combined use of corpus data and
methods and other sources of data
* New or remodeled theoretical frameworks relevant to corpus-based
contrastive and translation/interpreting studies
* Presentation of new resources for contrastive and translation
studies (spoken and multimodal corpora, sign language (interpreting)
corpora, transcript datasets, corpora of low-resourced languages,
lexicons, databases, etc.)
* Linguistic variation of various types, e.g. variation driven by
register or genre variation, learner language, target audience, mode
of production, etc.
* Cognitive approaches to translation (and other language product)
properties
* Analysis of non-canonical forms of (multilingual) communication
* Corpus use in translator training, foreign language learning/teaching
* Corpus use in multilingual (e-)lexicography and terminology
* Quality assessment in (automatic) translation and interpreting
* Non-canonical forms of translation/interpreting and multilingual
communication
* Corpus analysis of translation between close languages, from a third
language, non-native translation, indirect/relay translation, etc.
* Analysis of accessible communication (e.g. intralingual translation,
audio-visual and audio-descriptive forms, etc.)
* Corpora and linguistic resources for low resource languages
The submissions are to be made in the form of anonymized extended
abstracts (in PDF) that should be between *800* and *1000* words long
(excluding references) by *20th November 2027*. Apart from a clear
outline of the aims and methods of the study, the abstracts should also
provide (preliminary) results. The abstracts will be submitted in pdf
through theOpen review system
<https://openreview.net/group?id=UCCTS/2027/Conference#tab-your-consoles>
and reviewed by at least two members of the scientific committee. The
accepted contributions will be presented either as oral talks or as
posters.
* Important dates*
* Conference abstract submission due: 20 November 2026
* Notification of acceptance: 29 January 2027
* Final abstract version due: 19 February 2027
* Registration open: 26 February 2027
* Early-bird registration: 9 April 2027
* *Conference date*: 9-11 June 2027

Dear Colleagues,
We are pleased to announce the Call for Participation for SemEval-2027 Task 3: Semantic Change Across Multiple Time Periods.
SemEval-2027 Task 3 investigates how word meanings evolve across multiple historical time periods. While previous shared tasks have focused on comparisons between just two time points, this task extends the setting to ten time periods, using a multilingual benchmark of approximately 120,000 human annotations, allowing participants to model the evolution of individual word senses over time.
The benchmark spans six languages annotated across ten time periods ranging roughly 1880--2023: Swedish, English, Italian, Spanish, Dutch, and Russian (140 words in total).
The task consists of two subtasks:
- Subtask 1: Diachronic Word Sense Induction – discover how word meanings evolve over time without predefined sense inventories.
Evaluated via two tracks: Track 1a, Diachronic Sense Assignment (BCubed F1), and Track 1b, Sense Dynamics (Spearman's rank correlation over Jensen-Shannon Divergence).
- Subtask 2: Hypothesis-Driven Change Detection – given a target sense definition, identify which usages express that sense. Evaluated via Average F1-score.
