Special Issue on the Ethics of NLP and CL in Computational Linguistics
Language processing technologies from Siri to Google Translate and
ChatGPT have become ubiquitous in our societies. Consequently, there has
been a decade of attention to algorithmically mediated harms, including
harms arising from social biases and discriminatory technologies. In
this special issue, we broadly invite contributions that reflect on the
ethics of language technologies. We invite theoretical and technical
submissions around - but not limited to:
* Reflection on bias and fairness research and its outcomes;
* Interdisciplinary perspectives on bias, fairness, and
algorithmically mediated harms;
* Critiques of existing approaches;
* Development of new theories for bias, fairness, and algorithmically
mediated harms;
* Analyses of power relationships (including conflicts of interests)
and their impacts;
* Multilingual considerations;
* Decolonisation in relation to bias and fairness;
* Reflections on ongoing debates on bias, fairness, and ethics;
* Language technologies in context (e.g., in political/social/cultural
tensions);
* Slow science and its relationship to bias and fairness;
* Luddite and decomputing perspectives on language technologies, bias,
and fairness;
* Environmental impacts of language technologies
* The impacts and social considerations of data labour;
* Social and societal harms of language technologies; and
* External perspectives on language technologies.
We particularly encourage inter-, cross- and transdisciplinary
submissions which center questions around the fairness, bias, justice,
and ethics of natural language processing technologies and computational
linguistics.

Language is in constant flux, shaped by social, cultural, and cognitive forces over time. With the increasing availability of large-scale textual data and computational tools, researchers are now better equipped than ever to uncover patterns and mechanisms of language change across different linguistic areas (e.g., morphology, syntax, semantics). This conference explores the intersection of quantitative diachronic linguistics and cultural analytics, to investigate how language evolves and how these changes relate – directly or broadly – to cultural dynamics.

variability engineering, software reuse, and software product line engineering.
As modern software systems must cope with evolving requirements, heterogeneous

After two successful editions at ECIR (2024 & 2025), the Knowledge-Enhanced Information Retrieval (KEIR) workshop is coming to CIKM 2026 in Rome!
KEIR brings together researchers from Information Retrieval, NLP, Data Mining, and Knowledge Management to advance the principled integration of external knowledge into retrieval systems and the language models that power them.
We invite both short and long papers presenting original or work-in-progress research, as well as position, applied, and resource papers. About the conference
This conference foregrounds DH as method-making and infrastructure-
building, not only tool use. It invites scholarship that advances
shared practices (methods, standards, datasets, workflows, pedagogies)
while staying attentive to the politics of computation, language,
heritage, and knowledge-making in Southern Africa. It also explicitly
welcomes critical engagements with AI as an epistemic and cultural
force shaping humanities inquiry. Contributions are welcome from across
the humanities and allied fields, as well as from computer scientists,
data scientists, designers, librarians, archivists, journalists,
educators, and community practitioners.

We are looking for a PhD Candidate (65%, m/f/x) in Digital Forensic Linguistics
The position is located in the group headed by Prof. Dr. Tatjana Scheffler (Digital Forensic Linguistics) in the Institute for German Studies. The research focus of the group is the theoretical and computational analysis of human language in digital media, in particular computational approaches to forensic linguistics. Research topics of the group include disinformation, hate speech, and automatic approaches to digital authorship, among others. The position includes a small teaching requirement (approximately 1 class per semester), which will be carried out in the undergraduate and graduate programs in German linguistics.
This position is meant to lead to further qualification of the holder in the form of a Ph.D. degree. Work on the Ph.D. thesis is considered part of the tasks in this position and should center around a project in the newly established field of digital forensic linguistics.
Your tasks:
- Investigating new computational linguistic methods of analyzing, detecting and combating harmful online language (disinformation, hate speech, or other digital forensic applications)
- Contributing to the development of the emerging research field Digital Forensic Linguistics
- Creation of annotated corpora and datasets
- Collaboration in an interdisciplinary team
- Preparing research results for publication in leading venues (conferences and journals)
- Teaching (1 class per semester) in the field of German linguistics (preferably in German)
- Supervising student research assistants (m/f/x)
Your profile:
- Very good Master's degree in computational linguistics or a related subject
- Knowledge of and ideally practical experience with natural language processing (NLP), including machine learning methods (statistical methods, deep learning, LLMs)
- Solid programming skills (e.g., Python)
- Excellent language skills (reading and writing) in English; German skills preferred
- Knowledge and experience in one or more of the following fields would be beneficial: forensic linguistics, corpus linguistics, analysis of social media data, psycholinguistic experiments, visual communication
- Willingness to participate in interdisciplinary research

We are pleased to announce the 2nd Workshop on Sign Language Processing (WSLP 2026), co-located with EMNLP 2026, to be held in Budapest, Hungary, on October 29, 2026.
WSLP 2026 aims to provide a dedicated forum for researchers, practitioners, and industry professionals working on sign language technologies. The workshop will showcase recent advances in sign language understanding, translation, recognition, generation, and multimodal AI, with a special emphasis on low-resource and underrepresented sign languages.
