Euphemisms are a linguistic device used to soften or neutralize language that may otherwise be harsh or awkward to state directly (e.g. "between jobs" instead of "unemployed", "late" instead of "dead", "collateral damage" instead of "war-related civilian deaths"). By acting as alternative words or phrases, euphemisms are used in everyday language to maintain politeness, mitigate discomfort, or conceal the truth. While they are culturally-dependent, the need to discuss sensitive topics in a non-offensive way is universal, suggesting similarities in the way euphemisms are used across languages and cultures. Terms which may be used euphemistically sometimes require context to determine a euphemistic usage: *"Asked to choose between jobs and the environment, a majority -- at least in our warped, first-past-the-post system -- will pick jobs."* [ non-euphemistic] vs. *"This summer, the budding talent agent was between jobs and free to babysit pretty much any time."* [euphemistic] In this shared task, participants are invited to develop approaches and models to disambiguate texts (in multiple languages) as either euphemistic or not. Participants are encouraged to develop multilingual and cross-lingual approaches. [Apologies for cross-postings] 1st CfP LEGAL 2024 Legal and Ethical Issues in Human Language Technologies Workshop at LREC-COLING 2024, Turin, Italy https://legal2024.mobileds.de/ May 25, 2024 About the Workshop 2023 is likely to be remembered as a year dominated by discussions about Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Large Language Models (LLM). These technologies require data to be collected and utilized in unprecedented amounts. Large sets of Language data are owned by stakeholders that are not necessarily involved in the development of such technologies. To use these sets for AI and LLM, it is essential to repackage and repurpose them for such endeavor. Language data, despite their intangible nature, are often subject to legal constraints which need to be addressed in order to guarantee lawful access to and re-use of these data. In recent years, considerable efforts have been made to adapt legal frameworks to the advancements in technology while taking into account the interests of various stakeholders. From the technological perspective, the strict consideration of legal aspects imposes further questions besides pure recording technology and participant consent. This arises in several key elements: - What is the Intellectual Proprietary status of Large Language sets, the corresponding Large Language Models, and their potential outputs? - How can identifying information used in deep learning be removed or anonymized (and is this mandatory), how reliable are predictions/ models based on anonymized data? - Which impact does this have on the usability, computational costs? The purpose of this full-day workshop is to build bridges between technology and legal framework, and discuss current legal and ethical issues in the human language technology sector. Job : Ph.D. student (UClouvain ) : iRead4skills : Intelligent Reading Improvement System for Fundamental and Transversal Skills Development L'UCLouvain recherche un chercheur ou une chercheuse pour un doctorat en traitement automatique du langage - bourse de doctorat à temps plein (100%) pour une durée de deux ans - pour le Centre de traitement automatique du langage (CENTAL), de l'Institut langage et communication (ILC) à l’UCLouvain (Louvain-la-Neuve) - entrée en fonction: 1er mars 2024 (négociable) Cette proposition de bourse de doctorat s’intègre dans le cadre du projet Européen iRead4Skills - Système intelligent d’amélioration de la lecture pour le développement des compétences fondamentales et transversales (https://iread4skills.com/fr/). Il s’agit d’un projet de recherche et d’innovation financé par la Commission européenne : HORIZON-CL2-2022-TRANSFORMATIONS-01-07, réalisé en collaboration avec 8 partenaires disséminés en Espagne, au Portugal et en Belgique. Le projet iRead4Skills vise àpromouvoir le développement des compétences en lecture chez des adultes faibles lecteurs à travers un système intelligent innovant qui évalue la complexité des textes et suggère des lectures adaptées au niveau de l’utilisateur. Le système pourra également être utilisé par les formateurs pour la sélection ou l’adaptation de textes d’un niveau de complexité approprié pour leurs étudiants. Enfin, via la production d’un diagnostic précis sur les lieux de difficulté des textes, le système pourra servir pour l’assistance à la simplification des textes. Le projet se situe donc à l’intersection entre les domaines de la lisibilité, de la simplification automatique de textes et de l’enseignement de la lecture à des faibles lecteurs. D’une part, il est ancré au sein d’un laboratoire dont les recherches en lisibilité et en simplification automatique de textes sont reconnues internationalement. D’autre part, il s’inscrit dans un solide consortium regroupant des experts représentatifs des différentes disciplines nécessaires à la bonne réalisation du projet. Au sein de projet, le rôle du doctorant ou de la doctorante engagé(e) consistera à mener la partie des recherches qui concerne surtout le développement des outils de lisibilité, à savoir (1) développer de nouvelles métriques de lisibilité aptes à prendre en compte les caractéristiques pédagogiques spécifiques au public des faibles lecteurs et illettrés ; (2) mettre au point un modèle machine learning (classique et/ou deep learning) sur la base d’un corpus de textes dont la difficulté globale et de certains éléments textuels aura été annotés par des professeurs et des faibles lecteurs. La quantité de données étant relativement limitée, la personne engagée sera aussi amenée à explorer des pistes basées sur les larges modèles de langue et le few-shot. Ensuite, (3) sur la base de cette annotation, il s’agira de participer au développement de l’outil diagnostic permettant d’identifier les segments difficiles à lire dans un texte et (4) d’intégrer ce modèle de lisibilité au sein d’un prototype disponible sur un site web. Le chercheur ou la chercheuse devra également assurer la diffusion des résultats obtenus via des publications scientifiques et rédiger une thèse de doctorat. Il ou elle sera amené à collaborer étroitement avec les autres membres de l’équipe en vue d’assurer la bonne réalisation de ces tâches. Quelques missions sont aussi prévues dans les universités partenaires, afin d’assurer une bonne collaboration au sein du consortium. Un budget est également prévu pour des déplacements en conférence pour les publications scientifiques en lien avec le projet. Qualifications et aptitudes requises Le candidat répondra aux qualifications suivantes : * Être porteur d’un master en Linguistique computationelle, en Traitement automatique du langage (TAL), ou en Informatique (option en Intelligence artificielle). * Faire montre d’un excellent parcours académique * Disposer de bonnes compétences informatiques : * langages de programmation : Python, R (ou similaire) * la connaissance de scikit-learn, pandas, tensorflow/keras et/ou pytorch * systèmes : Linux de préférence * Bonne connaissance des principaux outils et algorithmes du TAL. La connaissance des réseaux de neurones profonds est un plus. * Excellente maîtrise du français (niveau C1 minimum) et bonne connaissance de l’anglais (niveau B2 minimum) * Une expérience pédagogique dans le domaine du français langue étrangère ou de l’alphabétisation est un plus. * Autonomie, curiosité, sens du travail en équipe, capacité d’écoute et d’analyse des besoins, réactivité. Conditions d’engagement : Cette bourse de doctorat est soumise aux conditions suivantes : * À la date d’engagement, le doctorant doit être titulaire depuis au maximum 3 ans* d’un grade académique de master 120 crédits ou d’un grade reconnu comme équivalent. * Le montant net de la bourse est d’environ 2 370 euros par mois. * Le doctorant devra se domicilier en Belgique pour des raisons légales. First Workshop on Patient-Oriented Language Processing (CL4HEALTH) @ LREC-COLING 2024 https://bionlp.nlm.nih.gov/cl4health2024/ Torino, Italy (co-located with LREC-COLING 2024) May 20, 2024 SCOPE This first workshop on patient-oriented language processing aims to establish a general venue for presenting research and applications focused on patients’ needs, including summarizing health records for the patients, answering consumer-health questions using reliable resources, detecting misinformation or potentially harmful information, and providing multi-modal information, such as video, if it better satisfies patients’ needs. Such a venue is needed both to invigorate patient-oriented language processing research and to build a community of researchers interested in this area. The growing interest in this topic is fueled by several current trends: - a proliferation of online services that target patients but do not always act in their best interests - policy changes that allow patients to access their health records written in the professional vernacular, which may confuse the patients or lead to misinterpretation; - replacement of customer services with chat bots; and - the increasing tendency of patients to consult online resources as a second or even first opinion on their health problems. We invite papers concerning all areas of language processing focused on patients’ health. The workshop will be centered on language technologies for health-related issues concerning the public that include, but are not limited to: - accessibility and trustworthiness of health information provided to the public - explainable and evidence-supported answers to consumer-health questions - accurate summarization of patients’ health records at their health-literacy level - understanding patients' non-informational needs through their language, and accurate and accessible interpretations of biomedical research Broadly, CL4Health is concerned with the resources, computational approaches, and behavioral and socio-economic aspects of the public interactions with digital resources in search of health-related information that satisfies their information needs and guides their actions. The topics of interest for the workshop include but are not limited to the following: - Health-related information needs and online behaviors of the public - Quality assurance and ethics considerations in language technologies and approaches applied to text and other modalities for public consumption - Summarization of EHR data for patients - Detection of misinformation in health-related resources and mitigation of potential harms - Consumer-health question answering - Biomedical text simplification/adaptation - Dialogue systems to support patients’ interactions with clinicians, healthcare systems, and online resources - Linguistic resources, data and tools for language technologies focusing on consumer health - Resources, strategies and metrics for system testing and evaluation - Infrastructures and pre-trained language models for consumer health - Processing and annotation platforms - Synthetic data generation and data augmentation. Call for Papers: 7th Laughter and Other Non-Verbal Vocalisations Workshop - July 16-17 2024 We are excited to announce the 7th Laughter and Other Non-Verbal Vocalisations Workshop (bit.ly/LaughterWorkshop2024) on July 16-17 at Queen’s University Belfast. The workshop will be a pre-conference event, part of the 2024 Conference of the International Society for Research on Emotion (www.isre2024.org). Non-verbal vocalisations in human-human and human-machine interactions play important roles in displaying social and affective behaviours and in managing the flow of interaction. Laughter, sighs, clicks, filled pauses, and short utterances such as feedback responses are among some of the non-verbal vocalisations that are being increasingly studied from various research fields. However, much is still unknown about the phonetic or visual characteristics of non-verbal vocalisations (production/encoding), their relations to the social actions they are part of, their perceived meanings (perception/decoding), and their ordering in interaction. Furthermore, with the increased interest for more naturalness in human-machine interaction, current times also invite exploring how these phenomena can be integrated in speech applications. Research themesinclude, but are not restricted to, these aspects of laughter and other non-verbal vocalisations: * Articulation, acoustics, and perception * Interaction and pragmatics * Affective and evaluative meanings * Social perception and organisation * Disfluency * Technology applications Researchers are invited to submit extended abstracts(2 pages long, including figures and references) describing their work, including work in progress. Call for Papers: FigLang 2024 (Workshop on Figurative Language Processing)

Processing of figurative language is a rapidly growing area in NLP, including computational modeling of metaphors, idioms, puns, irony, sarcasm, simile, and other figures. Characteristic to all areas of human activity (from poetic, ordinary, scientific, social media) and, thus, to all types of discourse, figurative language becomes an important problem for NLP systems. Its ubiquity in language has been established in a number of corpus studies and the role it plays in human reasoning has been confirmed in psychological experiments. This makes figurative language an important research area for computational and cognitive linguistics, and its automatic identification, interpretation and generation indispensable for any semantics-oriented NLP application. The proposed workshop will be the fourth edition of the biennial Workshop on Figurative Language Processing, whose first editions were held at NAACL 2018, ACL 2020 and EMNLP 2022, respectively. The workshop builds upon a long series of related workshops that the current organizers have been involved with: “Metaphor in NLP” series (2013-2016) and “Computational Approaches to Linguistic Creativity” series (2009-2010). We expand the scope to incorporate various types of figurative language, with the aim of maintaining and nourishing a community of NLP researchers interested in this topic. The main focus will be on computational modeling of figurative language, however papers on cognitive, linguistic, social, rhetorical, and applied aspects are also of interest, provided that they are presented within a computational, formal, or a quantitative framework. Recent advancement in language models have led to several works on figurative language understanding (Chakrabarty et al 2022a; Chakrabarty et al 2022b; Liu et al 2022; Hu et al 2023) and generation (Stowe et al 2021; Chakrabarty et al 2021; Sun et al 2022; Tian et al 2021) At the same time large language models have opened up opportunities to utilize figurative language in scientific (Kim et al 2023) as well as creative writing (Chakrabarty et al 2022c; Tian et al 2022). Additionally there have also been recent work on multimodal figurative language generation (Chakrabarty et al 2023; Akula et al 2023), understanding (Hessel et al 2023; Yosef et al 2023) and interpretation (Hwang et al 2023; Desai et al 2022; Kumar et al 2022). We encourage submissions along these axes. Topics of Interest The workshop will solicit both full papers and short papers for either oral or poster presentation. By acting as alternative words or phrases, euphemisms are used in everyday language to maintain politeness, mitigate discomfort, or conceal the truth. While they are culturally-dependent, the need to discuss sensitive topics in a non-offensive way is universal, suggesting similarities in the way euphemisms are used across languages and cultures. We propose a shared task in which participants will need to disambiguate sentences in multiple languages as either euphemistic or not. The dataset will include English, Mandarin, Spanish, Yoruba, and possibly additional languages. Understanding of Figurative Language through Visual Entailment: One important modality that has gained interest recently is vision, namely the interpretation of figurative language in media such as memes, art, or comics. This task is challenging because it involves reasoning abstractly about images, and also involves understanding social commonsense and cultural context. We will frame this as a visual entailment task where a model not only has to predict if a caption entails the content in the image but also provide free text explanations justifying the label prediction. These tasks have proved difficult for state-of-the-art multimodal models in the past. We will have a paper and a baseline for the same.
