[PhD-Position] Muiltimodal Fake-News and Disinformation Detection incl. xAI in TU Berlin

Dear colleagues, deadline approaching - roughly only a week left! TU Berlin is looking for a PhD candidate and Researcher, offering a 3 years contract with optional prolongation in our joint "News Polygraph“ project. We will primarily focus on applying various natural language processing models (especially transformer-based models) in the area of text-based fake news detention. In addition, various models will be explored and implemented in the domain of explainable AI, in order to make language models more transparent and reliable for end users. Moreover, data handling for English and German inputs is required for creating balanced training data to prevent biases in data, but countermeasures for biases in NLP models should also be handled. Real end users are involved in this project, e.g. Rundfunk Berlin Brandenburg (rbb - Berlin and Brandenburg’s official broadcaster on TV, radio and online) and Deutsche Welle (DW - Germany’s official voice for Germany abroad, broadcasting in more than 50 languages around the world), for whom a fact checking platform is to be developed that enables journalists to verify information in different modalities. In addition, several project partners from science (German Research Centre for Artificial Intelligence SLT and Fraunhofer IDMT) and industry (Ubermetrics, Transfermedia, Crowdee and Delphai) will work on similar solution approaches for the modalities audio, image and video. Finally, the project integrated crowd-wisdom harvesting automation into AI modelling in order to fuse human and artificial intelligence the best ways possible. This project combines both scientific developments with practical requirements in order to be able to process and detect false information faster and more comprehensively. If desired and suitable, a PhD in the subject area can be pursued as well as publication and presentation of project and research results in scientific journals, at conferences and workshops. We organize the MEDDOPLACE shared task (Medical Documents PLAce-related Content Extraction, part of the IberLEF/SEPLN2023 initiative) devoted to the recognition, normalization and classification of location and location-related concept mentions for high impact healthcare data mining scenarios. For this task we released the MEDDOPLACE corpus of clinical case texts in Spanish annotated with location-relevant entity mentions, following annotation guidelines and entity linking procedures. Practical impact: - Diagnosis & prognosis: Location information is important for the diagnosis or prognosis of some diseases that are more endemic to certain regions or particular geographical environments. - Health risk factors: Geolocation information can be a risk factor in case of exposure to radiation, work-related or environmental contaminants affecting patients health. - Mobility: Due to the increasing mobility of populations, detection of patients' travels and movements can improve early detection and tracing of infectious disease outbreaks, and thus enable taking preventive measurements. The expected results and resources show a multilingual adaptation potential and impact beyond healthcare (e.g. adaptation to tourism/traveling-related content or legal texts). TASKS SUBTRACKS: 1. Location Entity Recognition: detect exact character offsets of all location & location-related mentions. 2. Geographic Entity Normalization (Geocoding/Entity Linking): for entity mentions, normalize them to their GeoNames (Toponym Resolution), PlusCodes (POIs Toponym Resolution) & SNOMED CT (Entity Linking) concept, depending on entity type. 3. Entity Subclassification: Classification of entity mentions into four subcategories of clinical relevance (patient’s origin place; residence’s location; place where the patient has traveled to/from; place where the patient has received medical attention) 4. End-to-End: Participant systems are evaluated in all three tasks above sequentially instead of being evaluated on their own. The position is situated in Project B1 on the Diachronic Development of Scientific English using information-theoretic approaches and considering rational communication accounts. Project B1 is concerned with the hypothesis of communicative optimization in the development of scientific English. Based on a diachronic corpus (Royal Society Corpus), we have applied selected types of computational language models (e.g. topic models, n-gram models, word embeddings) and combined them with information-based measures (e.g. entropy, surprisal) to capture diachronic variation. In the upcoming project phase, we intend to address the following research questions: (1) Is there evidence of a more general diachronic mechanism (beyond scientific language)? (2) Within scientific language, what are additional, typical imprints of conventionalization (register variables)? (3) How can we assess the overall communicative efficiency of scientific language (effects on working memory)? Focusing on selected linguistic phenomena (multi-word expressions, discourse markers, nominal vs. verbal phrases), we complement a corpus-based, production-oriented approach with selected behavioral, comprehension-oriented studies. They should be no more than three pages in length and must include: - Description of the workshop: title, abstract, objectives, relevance and its potential impact on the NLP community and society. - Motivation: why a PROPOR workshop on this topic is needed. - Description of the target audience. - List of core committed program committee members (2 to 3 members). - Preliminary list of invited speakers (if any). - For workshops previously held at PROPOR or other conferences, details on venue, attendance, and number of submissions from previous years should be provided. - For new workshops, a list of potential attendees/submissions and/or a justification of the expected attendees and submissions. - Relevant experience of the organizing committee. - Duration of the workshop (full day or half day). - Contact information (address, email, and phone - WhatsApp) for all organizers. - A draft Call for Papers. - Designation of a main contact person. The workshop organizers are responsible for: - Creating and distributing call-for-papers, call-for-participation and any other relevant advertising. The calls should make it clear that at least one author of any accepted paper must attend the event and that papers will be withdrawn if no such participation is secured with the payment of the workshop dues. The call should clearly describe the review and selection process. Finally, the calls must be framed to encourage as broad a participation as possible. - Creating and publishing (on time) a website with all the relevant information about the workshop. - Provide an extended abstract for the conference program. - Review (at least two independent reviewers) and select the submitted papers. - Schedule the presentations within the workshop. - It should be noted that the conference organization does not budget for free registration, accommodation, or travel expenses for the workshop organizers or their invited speakers. The workshop organizers should therefore secure any source of funding/sponsorship deemed necessary for their invited speakers. - Prepare electronic proceedings volumes by the end of February 2024. - Attend the workshop and select any required session chairs. CALL FOR TUTORIAL PROPOSALS Tutorials are intended to either provide a comprehensive introduction to core techniques/areas of interest or address advanced topics of language and speech processing including but not limited to the topics of the conference as stated in the call for papers. Especially encouraged are tutorials focusing on the computational processing of Portuguese, Galician and their variants. Important dates - Tutorial proposals due: December 1, 2023. - Notification of decision: December 15, 2023. - Tutorial descriptions due: February 1, 2024. - Tutorial course material due: March 3, 2024. - Expected Tutorial date: March 13, 2024. Submission Details Proposals for tutorials should contain: - A title and a brief description of the tutorial content and its relevance to the PROPOR community (not more than 2 pages). - A brief outline of the tutorial structure showing that the tutorial’s core content can be covered in a two- or three-hour slot (including a coffee break). - The names, affiliations, email addresses, and websites of the tutorial instructors, including a one-paragraph statement of their research interests and areas of expertise. - A list of previous venues and approximate audience sizes, if the same or a similar tutorial has been given elsewhere. - A description of special requirements for technical equipment (e.g., Internet access). Submission will be done via email to propor2024wsttut(a)googlegroups.com. Tutorial Speaker Responsibilities Accepted tutorial speakers must provide an abstract of their tutorials for inclusion in the conference registration material. The description should be in the ASCII version that can be included in email announcements and published on the conference website. Tutorial speakers must provide tutorial materials, at least containing copies of the course slides, and a bibliography for the material covered in the tutorial. Each tutorial will be granted one registration to the main conference.
