Oral languages is understood here as referring to spoken vernacular languages which depend on oral transmission, including endangered languages and (typically low-prestige) regional varieties of major languages. >> >> The special session intends to provide up-to-date information to an audience of phoneticians about developments in machine learning that make it increasingly feasible to automate segmentation, alignment or labelling of audio recordings, even in less-documented languages. A methodological goal is to help establish the field of Computational Language Documentation and contribute to its close association with the phonetic sciences. FYI Best, Claudia ************ COMPUTEL-3 Workshop on the Use of Computational Methods in the Study of Endangered Languages CfP: https://computel-workshop.org/computel/computel-3/call-for-papers/ The ComputEL-3 workshop will focus on the use of computational methods in the study, support, and revitalization of endangered languages. The primary aim of the workshop is to continue narrowing the gap between computational linguists interested in working on methods for endangered languages, field linguists working on documenting these languages, and the language communities who are striving to maintain their languages. We take seriously the goal of reaching all relevant communities. To support this goal, ComputEL-3 aims to alternate between co-location with computational linguistics conferences and with language documentation conferences. ComputEL-3 will take place on 26-27 February 2019, immediately preceding the 6th International Conference on Language Documentation and Conservation (ICLDC6). Papers are invited which explore the interface and intersection of computational linguistics, documentary linguistics, and community-based language revitalization efforts. The committee encourages submissions which: (i) examine the use of specific methods in the analysis of data from low-resource languages, with a focus on endangered languages, or propose new methods for analysis of such data, (ii) propose new models for the collection, management, and deployment of data in endangered language settings, or (iii) consider what concrete steps are required to allow for a more fruitful interaction between computer scientists, documentary linguists, and language communities. The intention of the workshop is not merely to allow for the presentation of research on these topics, but also to continue building a network of computational linguists, documentary linguists, and community language activists who are able to effectively join together to serve their common interests. PRESENTATIONS We will have both oral plaftorm presentation sessions and a Poster session. The decision on whether a presentation will be a platform or poster one will be taken by the Organizing Committee on the advice of the Program Committee, taking into account the subject matter and how that might be best conveyed. Platform and poster presentations will not be distinguished in the Proceedings. SUBMISSIONS In line with our goal of reaching different academic communities, we offer two different modes of submission under two different tracks: (a) linguistic community perspective and (b) academic perspective. The selected mode/track of submission does not influence likelihood of acceptance. Camera-ready versions will have the same length ranges for both submission tracks, according to the original Submission Format (see Submission Formats and Proceedings below). Submissions must be uploaded via TBD/ComputEL-3 no later than October 15, 2018, 11:59PM (UTC-11, time zone of American Samoa). Please indicate clearly which of the two modes (Extended abstract or Full short/long paper) you are submitting to. All submissions must be anonymous and will be peer-reviewed by the Scientific Committee. Notification of acceptance will be sent out by November 12, 2018. Submission formats A. Extended abstract: Please submit anonymous abstracts of up to 1500 words. B. Full paper (short or long): Please submit (anonymously) either long papers (max. 8 pages plus references) or short papers (max. 4 pages plus references) according to the style and formatting guidelines provided in the CompuEL-3 Style Files (which have template files for both LaTeX and Microsoft Word). Authors will be allowed one extra page for the final version. PROCEEDINGS Authors whose presentations are selected for the conference will be eligible to submit their papers for online publication via the open-access ACL Anthology. Full and short papers will be allotted 1 additional page (altogether 5 and 9 pages) excluding references. Extended abstracts will be alloted 5 pages (according to the short paper format), excluding references. Proceedings papers should be revised and improved versions of the material content that was submitted for, and which has undergone, review. Extensions should concern responses to reviewer comments and the addition of further relevant details and clarifications, but not entirely new, unreviewed content. In particular, extended abstracts cannot be turned into full-length 9-page long papers. Camera-ready versions of the articles will be due on January 21, 2019. FUNDING We anticipate being able to support travel costs in some cases for students whose papers are accepted as well as scholars from lower income countries.
