Dear all,
reposting including link information for joining online.
We are hosting a rapid response online panel on Friday 24 May 2024 at 15:00 (BST) about the recent and devastating floods in South Brazil and the role of science in modelling, predicting and responding to extreme climate events, and how it can inform and support response and replanning efforts.
This online event is open to all, and details about how to join are included below.

Climate change and the increase in extreme climatic events present a pressing challenge globally. This panel focuses on the environmental, social, and economic ramifications of climate change in the recent floods in Southern Brazil. With over 2 million people and more than 90% of the region's municipalities affected, heavy rainfalls have disrupted both electricity and treated water supplies, closed the main airport for months and caused extensive damage to traffic on highways. A substantial impact on economic activity is expected. We discuss the role of science in monitoring and preventing these crises and in supporting emergency actions and reconstruction plans.
