Dear all, we are glad to present to you a new BERT-based model for Sentiment Analysis ( for Italian ), trained and benchmarked on multiple domains! The model has been jointly optimized and fine-tuned on multiple domains such as product reviews, social media comments and financial news. The model has achieved better performance than fine-tuning it in isolation on every single dataset, reaching state-of-the-art results in the majority of the datasets that we used. Developing disease recognition tools for social media is critical for: - Real-time disease outbreak surveillance/monitoring - Characterization of patient-reported symptoms - Post-market drug safety - Epidemiology and population health, - Public opinion mining & sentiment analysis of diseases - Detection of hate speech/exclusion of sick people - Prevalence of work-associated diseases SocialDisNER is the first track focusing on the detection of disease mentions in tweets written in Spanish, with clear adaptation potential not only to English but also other romance languages like Portuguese, French or Italian spoken by over 900 million people worldwide. For this track the SocialDisNER corpus was generated, a manual collection of tweets enriched for first-hand experiences by patients and their relatives as well as content generated by patient-associations (national, regional, local) as well as healthcare institutions covering all main diseases types including cancer, mental health, chronic and rare diseases among others. Recent advances in NLP have the potential to revolutionize how we study human society. But using these tools effectively, reliably, and equitably requires continuous dialog between experts across computational methods, social science, and the humanities. TADA 2022 invites applications for research presentations on new work related to text-as-data methods and applications. TADA is an interdisciplinary conference, drawing scholars from across the social sciences, computer and information science, and related fields. Our programs from past meetings (e.g. TADA 2021 <https://tada2021.org/>) show the wide range of work presented at our conference. Key Dates: Monday July 18, abstract submission Friday Aug 5, notification of selection Friday Aug 12, registration for participation Thursday Sep 22, full papers for discussants Thursday Oct 6 – Friday Oct 7, conference This year’s conference will be held at Cornell Tech on Roosevelt Island and is sponsored by the Cornell Center for Social Science and the Cornell Center for Data Science for Enterprise and Society. Proposals are due July 18, and consist of a brief, 300-word abstract in text format rather than a full paper. TADA 2022 is a non-archival conference; there are no formal proceedings, and papers presented at the conference will not be distributed publicly by the conference. Presenters are expected to provide a paper to their discussant two weeks before the conference. We welcome any work, so long as it hasn’t been previously presented at a TADA conference. We also welcome individuals to volunteer to serve as discussants. We are planning to hold TADA 2022 in a hybrid format. Participants who are willing to travel to NYC will attend the conference in person, while a remote option will be provided for the other participants. The conference will consist of oral presentations and a poster session with Ph.D. students. The conference will take place on October 6 and 7 during Eastern Daylight Time business hours. In addition to oral presentations and posters TADA 2022 will have a doctoral consortium. PhD students will be matched with experienced mentors from complementary fields to offer critiques to specific work and to provide guidance in how to do effective interdisciplinary work. Because in-person space is limited, we ask all interested participants to apply to attend the conference. There will be a separate registration for participants after the abstract review process. Diversity leads to stronger science. We actively seek, welcome, and encourage people with diverse backgrounds, experiences, and identities to apply and attend. [CFP] 2022 AAAI Fall Symposium on “Artificial Intelligence for Human-Robot Interaction” (AI-HRI) The ninth annual AAAI Fall Symposium on “Artificial Intelligence for Human-Robot Interaction” (AI-HRI) will take place on November 17-19, 2022, at the Westin Arlington Gateway in Arlington, VA, USA. We are planning a hybrid in-person and online format to reach more people who would not be able to attend in person. Overview The Artificial Intelligence (AI) for Human-Robot Interaction (HRI) symposium has been a successful venue of discussion and collaboration on AI aimed at HRI since 2014. This year, after a review of the achievements of the AI-HRI community over the last decade in 2021, we are focusing on a visionary theme: exploring the future of AI-HRI. Accordingly, we added a Blue Sky Ideas track to foster a forward-thinking discussion on future research at the intersection of AI and HRI. As always, we appreciate all contributions related to any topic on AI/HRI and welcome new researchers who wish to take part in this growing community. With the success of past symposia, AI-HRI impacts a variety of communities and problems, and has pioneered the discussions in recent trends and interests. This year's AI-HRI Fall Symposium aims to bring together researchers and practitioners from around the globe, representing a number of university, government, and industry laboratories. Symposium participants presenting their work will be encouraged to include a perspective on the reproducibility and ethics in HRI, though all research on AI-HRI will be considered. We will also continue to include community-building efforts in the schedule: position talks to incite discussion on new and controversial views; informal, focused discussions during poster sessions; breakout discussion sessions in smaller groups; and a demo session, which will emphasize live robot and AR/VR demonstrations. Such discussions and demos are ideal within the symposium community, which is small enough that we can all learn each other's names and faces, but large enough to draw an audience of people who have a real impact in our field. These discussions give perfect opportunities for new researchers in the field to meet senior members in a more informal setting, and become more involved in future collaboration within the community. This year, we have the opportunity to gather in person after two years of being virtual. For inclusiveness, we are planning in advance to implement a hybrid in-person and online format to reach more people who would not be able to attend in person. This will improve performance of existing tools for all users, reduce demographic bias, and enable completely new applications. Language reflects demographic factors like our age, gender, etc. People actively use this information to make inferences, but current language technology (NLP) fails to account for demographics, both in language understanding (e.g., sentiment analysis) and generation (e.g., chatbots). This failure prevents us from reaching human-like performance, limits possible future applications, and introduces systematic bias against underrepresented demographic groups. Solving demographic bias is one of the greatest challenges for current language technology. Failing to do so will limit the field and harm public trust in it. Bias in AI systems recently emerged as a severe problem for privacy, fairness, and ethics of AI. It is especially prevalent in language technology, due to language's rich demographic information. Since NLP is ubiquitous (translation, search, personal assistants, etc.), demographically biased models creates uneven access to vital technology. Despite increased interest in demographics in NLP, there are no concerted efforts to integrate it: no theory, data sets, or algorithmic solutions. INTEGRATOR will address these by identifying which demographic factors affect NLP systems, devising a bias taxonomy and metrics, and creating new data. These will enable us to use transfer and reinforcement learning methods to build demographically aware input representations and systems that incorporate demographics to improve performance and reduce bias. Demographically aware NLP will lead to high-performing, fair systems for text analysis and generation. This ground-breaking research advances our understanding of NLP, algorithmic fairness, and bias in AI, and creates new research resources and avenues. Successful candidates will work actively on novel directions in NLP, machine learning, and neural networks for representation learning, and transfer learning in various languages, and collaborate closely with Prof. Hovy as well as the lab. The candidates will innovate in both NLP and social sciences. Successful candidates will have to prove * excellent programming skills in Python (additional languages like C++, R, Julia are a plus), * knowledge of current neural network models for transfer and few-shot learning and * implementation tools for neural networks (e.g. PyTorch, Tensorflow, etc.) * prove strong track record in top-tier venues in the field of NLP/ Machine Learning. * fluency in spoken and written English. Stance detection in natural language texts deals with determining the position (or stance) of a text producer towards a target or a set of targets. This Research Topic specifically addresses all aspects related to stance detection and its applications, both from a theoretical and practical viewpoint. SCOPE It is a well-known fact that machine translation systems, especially those that use deep learning, require massive amounts of data. Several resources for languages are not available in their human-created format. Some of the types of resources available are monolingual, multilingual, translation memories, and lexicons. Those types of resources are generally created for formal purposes such as parliamentary collections when parallel and more informal situations when monolingual. The quality and abundance of resources including corpora used for formal reasons is generally higher than those used for informal purposes. Additionally, corpora for low-resource languages, languages with less digital resources available, tends to be less abundant and of lower quality. CoCo4MT sets out to be the first workshop centered around research that focuses on corpora creation, cleansing, and augmentation techniques specifically for machine translation. We accept work that covers any spoken language (including high-resource languages) but we are specifically interested in those submissions that are on languages with limited existing resources (low-resource languages) where resources are not highly available. The goal of this workshop is to begin to close the gap between corpora available for low-resource translation systems and promote high-quality data for online systems that can be used by native speakers of low-resource languages is of particular interest. Therefore, It will be beneficial if the techniques presented in research papers include their impact on the quality of MT output and how they can be used in the real world. CoCo4MT aims to encourage research on new and undiscovered techniques. We hope that submissions will provide high-quality corpora that is available publicly for download and can be used to increase machine translation performance thus encouraging new dataset creation for multiple languages that will, in turn, provide a general workshop to consult for corpora needs in the future. The workshop’s success will be measured by the following key performance indicators: - Promotes the ongoing increase in quality of machine translation systems when measured by standard measurements, - Provides a meeting place for collaboration from several research areas to increase the availability of commonly used corpora and new corpora, - Drives innovation to address the need for higher quality and abundance of low-resource language data. TOPICS We are highly interested in original research papers on the topics below; however, we welcome all novel ideas that cover research on corpora techniques. - Difficulties with using existing corpora (e.g., political considerations or domain limitations) and their effects on final MT systems, - Strategies for collecting new MT datasets (e.g., via crowdsourcing), - Data augmentation techniques, - Data cleansing and denoising techniques, - Quality control strategies for MT data, - Exploration of datasets for pretraining or auxiliary tasks for training MT systems. The length of each paper should be at least four (4) and not exceed ten (10) pages, plus unlimited pages for references. I will present some of our recent work in the topic, and discuss our efforts to make large language models more accessible for the community. Bio:Mikel Artetxe is a Research Scientist at FAIR (Meta AI). His primary area of research is multilingual NLP. Mikel was one the pioneers of unsupervised machine translation, and has done extensive work on cross-lingual representation learning. Date: Jun 24, 2022, 10:00 CET Summary: The development of advanced spoken language technologies based on automatic speech recognition (ASR) and text-to-speech synthesis (TTS) has enabled computers to either learn how to listen or speak. Many applications and services are now available but still support fewer than 100 languages. Nearly 7000 living languages that are spoken by 350 million people remain uncovered. This is because the construction is commonly done based on machine learning trained in a supervised fashion where a large amount of paired speech and corresponding transcription is required. In this talk, we will introduce a semi-supervised learning mechanism based on a machine speech chain framework. First, we describe the primary machine speech chain architecture that learns not only to listen or speak but also to listen while speaking. The framework enables ASR and TTS to teach each other given unpaired data. After that, we describe the use of machine speech chain for code-switching and cross-lingual ASR and TTS of several languages, including low-resourced ethnic languages. Finally, we describe the recent multimodal machine chain that mimics overall human communication to listen while speaking and visualizing. With the support of image captioning and production models, the framework enables ASR and TTS to improve their performance using an image-only dataset. The IDS has a vacancy for the following full-time (39.5 hours per week) or part-time (at least 65%) position in the Department of Digital Linguistics: Research Associate Research Software Engineer (RSE): Development & Operation in the field of corpus linguistics / text mining (Reference number 19/2022) The employment relationship is limited to up to 2 years, depending on personal requirements. Designed for the acquisition of acoustic-phonetic knowledge and for the development and evaluation of automatic speech recognition systems, it contains recordings of 630 American English speakers each reading 10 phonetically rich sentences, for a total of 6300 utterances comprising 2342 distinct sentences. Data collection and annotation were a joint effort by Texas Instruments, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and SRI International, and the data release was prepared by NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology). TIMIT was among the first publications that appeared with the launch of LDC's catalog in 1993. It remains one of the Consortium's top ten distributed corpora and may be the single most widely-used speech database. Despite its age and small size relative to modern data sets, TIMIT's wide range of phonetically-representative inputs, its time-aligned lexical and phonemic transcripts, and its easy availability through the LDC Catalog have contributed to its widespread use and continued popularity. Thousands of researchers remember its famous first sentence: "she had your dark suit in greasy wash water all year". LDC continues the TIMIT series with its Global TIMIT project which aims to create a series of corpora in a variety of languages with TIMIT-like features. (Chanchaochai et al., 2018). Data sets published from that project include: Global TIMIT Learner Treebank English, Global TIMIT Learner Simple English, Global TIMIT Mandarin Chinese - Guanzhong Dialect, and Global TIMIT Mandarin Chinese. The Multi3Generation COST Action (www.multi3generation.eu) aims at promoting interdisciplinary research in Natural Language Generation, combining computationally-oriented methodology with theories and insights from the humanities (computational linguistics, psychology, media studies, philological and literary studies, etc.) The 2022 Multi3Generation training school on Creative Natural Language Generation wants to foster interdisciplinary collaborations among scholars and young researchers, delivering lectures, hands-on sessions, and keynotes on the state-of-the-art methodologies of Natural Language Generation and (computational) creativity. Automatic generation of texts is an essential task in artificial intelligence and is widely used to produce content shared on the web. However, evaluation of fluency and grammaticality of automatically created texts requires feedback provided by humans to improve the quality of the training data. Collecting judgments is challenging, and the annotation results' reproducibility is sometimes questioned. Evaluation of text generated by computationally creative systems poses further challenges: the output needs to be fluent while ensuring that the content should also take into account the literature about (computational) creativity for analysing creative output. Analysing such creative output relies on the genre of the text and readers' expectations. The training school programme will address research questions such as: - What are the theoretical aspects for evaluating the creativity of artificially generated text? - How crucial is the training set for generating plausible instances, such as for metaphor generation? - Are theoretical insights from literary studies suitable for producing better training sets? The training school is intended for academics at any stage of their career (with priority given to Early Career Investigators), especially if working with literary texts and datasets combining texts with images. The training school will be held at the University Ca' Foscari in Venice from 19 September to 23 September 2022. The focus of CoNLL is on theoretically, cognitively and scientifically motivated approaches to computational linguistics, rather than on work driven by particular engineering applications. Such approaches include: - Computational learning theory and other techniques for theoretical analysis of machine learning models for NLP - Models of first, second and bilingual language acquisition by humans - Models of language evolution and change - Computational simulation and analysis of findings from psycholinguistic and neurolinguistic experiments - Analysis and interpretation of NLP models, using methods inspired by cognitive science or linguistics or other methods - Data resources, techniques and tools for scientifically-oriented research in computational linguistics - Connections between computational models and formal languages or linguistic theories - Linguistic typology, translation, and other multilingual work - Theoretically, cognitively and scientifically motivated approaches to text generation We welcome work targeting any aspect of language, including: - Speech and phonology - Syntax and morphology - Lexical, compositional and discourse semantics - Dialogue and interactive language use - Sociolinguistics - Multimodal and grounded language learning We do not restrict the topic of submissions to fall into this list. However, the submissions’ relevance to the conference’s focus on theoretically, cognitively and scientifically motivated approaches will play an important role in the review process. Submitted papers must be anonymous and use the EMNLP 2022 template. Submitted papers may consist of up to 8 pages of content plus unlimited space for references. Authors of accepted papers will have an additional page to address reviewers’ comments in the camera-ready version (9 pages of content in total, excluding references). Optional anonymized supplementary materials and a PDF appendix are allowed, according to the EMNLP 2022 guidelines. Please refer to the EMNLP 2022 Call for Papers for more details on the submission format. Submission is electronic, using the Softconf START conference management system. CoNLL adheres to the ACL anonymity policy, as described in the EMNLP 2022 Call for Papers. Briefly, non-anonymized manuscripts submitted to CoNLL cannot be posted to preprint websites such as arXiv or advertised on social media after May 30th, 2022. Multiple submission policy CoNLL 2022 will not accept papers that are currently under submission, or that will be submitted to other meetings or publications, including EMNLP. Papers submitted elsewhere as well as papers that overlap significantly in content or results with papers that will be (or have been) published elsewhere will be rejected. Authors submitting more than one paper to CoNLL 2022 must ensure that the submissions do not overlap significantly (>25%) with each other in content or results. This position will focus on a broad range of research questions related to privacy-preserving NLP models with a special focus on neural machine translation. A solid background in machine learning for natural language processing is essential, prior experience with differential privacy in model training is a plus.
