The workshop provides a discussion panel for researchers working on MT systems/methods for low-resource and under-represented languages in general. We would like to help review/overview the state of MT for low-resource languages and define the most important directions. Fundamental work on low-resource languages in MT and NLP is still crucial and unavoidable. We also solicit papers dedicated to supplementary natural language processing (NLP) tools that are used in any language and especially in low-resource languages. Overview papers of these NLP tools are very welcome. It will be beneficial if the evaluations of these tools in research papers include their impact on the quality of MT output. *TOPICS* We are highly interested in (1) original research papers, (2) review/opinion papers, and (3) online systems on the topics below; however, we welcome all novel ideas that cover research on low-resource languages. - Neural machine translation for low-resource languages - Work that presents online systems for practical use by native speakers - Word tokenizers/de-tokenizers for specific languages - Word/morpheme segmenters for specific languages - Alignment/Re-ordering tools for specific language pairs - Use of morphology analyzers and/or morpheme segmenters in MT - Multilingual/cross-lingual NLP tools for MT - Corpora creation and curation technologies for low-resource languages - COVID-related corpora, their translations and corresponding NLP/MT systems - Review of available parallel corpora for low-resource languages - Research and review papers of MT methods for low-resource languages - MT systems/methods (e.g. rule-based, SMT, NMT) for low-resource languages - Pivot MT for low-resource languages - Zero-shot MT for low-resource languages - Fast building of MT systems for low-resource languages - Re-usability of existing MT systems for low-resource languages - Machine translation for language preservation *SUBMISSION INFORMATION* We are soliciting two types of submissions: (1) research, review, and position papers and (2) system demonstration papers. For research, review and position papers, the length of each paper should be at least four (4) and not exceed eight (8) pages, plus unlimited pages for references. CFP: The Seventh Workshop on Teaching NLP

The Seventh Workshop on Teaching NLP Call for Papers Educators designing Natural Language Processing (NLP) and/or Computational Linguistics (CL) courses and degree programs face unique challenges due to the rapid progress of the field, particularly with the impact of generative AI and Large Language Models (LLMs). Here, the challenge is two-fold: A) courses need to keep up with the pace in terms of the content covered, while B) it will be crucial for educators to adapt the course design accordingly, acknowledging the existence and the use of LLMs by students. To support all those who are facing these challenges, we are planning a discussion-heavy one-day workshop to bring together the communities of NLP research and education, and facilitate active discussion on questions such as (but not limited to): * How can we balance technical details, linguistic background, and domain knowledge in NLP-related courses? * How do we keep the human in the loop? * How can the community support educators at different institutions and career levels? This timely seventh edition of the Teaching NLP Workshop builds on prior successful offerings [1] to tackle the most pressing issues in how to design NLP courses and bring together instructors from various backgrounds to discuss, create, and refine instructional design and material. Submission Information We invite submissions in two categories: short papers (2 pages) on teaching materials and full papers (8 pages) on original, unpublished research (both regular research papers and position papers). Format All submissions must use the official ACL LaTeX style template [2] and follow the standard ACL submission requirements [3]. References and appendices do not count against the page limit (8 pages). Limitations and ethical considerations are optional and do not count against these limits either. Papers that do not conform to these requirements will be desk-rejected without review. Submission Process For submission and the review process, we will use OpenReview. If you do not have an OpenReview account yet, make sure to create it well in advance of the deadline. This is especially important, as in some cases, the approval of the account may take some time. The reviewing process will be single-blind. Submission Link (OpenReview): tbd Submission Type 1: Short Papers on Teaching Materials We invite submissions of short papers of 1-2 pages that describe teaching materials such as curricula, course GitHub repositories, Jupyter notebooks, slides, homework, programming assignments, or projects. These short papers need not be anonymized, but will be peer-reviewed and published as part of the workshop proceedings, and presented as posters and/or demos. The associated teaching materials, while not being part of the proceedings, should be submitted in addition to the short paper. We will create a Teaching NLP repository where authors may opt in to make their materials available for reuse after the workshop. Advance notice: ‘Statistics for linguistics with R’ bootcamp (08 – 12/07/2024)

The Linguistics Research Unit of the Institute of Language and Communication (Université catholique de Louvain, Belgium) will be hosting Stefan Gries’s next bootcamp on statistics for linguistics with R from 08 to 12 July 2024. The ‘Statistics for linguistics with R’ bootcamp is a hands-on introduction to statistical methods for both graduate students and seasoned researchers and is loosely based on the third edition (2021) of Gries’s textbook Statistics for linguistics with R. The course is intended for linguists who already have a basic knowledge in statistics and some experience using R and who wish to improve their proficiency in statistical modeling of linguistic data. Using the open source software and programming language R, we will deal with: • fundamental aspects of fixed effects regression modeling for both numeric and binary response variables; these include exploration of data and their preparation for modeling, model formulation and selection; numerical and visual interpretation and evaluation of models; • more advanced aspects of fixed-effects regression modeling such as contrasts for ordinal predictors, orthogonal contrasts, curvature of numeric predictors, and maybe general linear hypothesis tests; • the theoretical foundations of mixed-effects regression modeling; • applications of mixed-effects modeling for both numeric and binary response variables; • tree-based methods and random forests: 'fitting' and interpreting them with importance scores, partial dependence scores, and detecting (not just capturing) interactions. IUI submissions should address HCI challenges using machine intelligence and consider both computational and human- centric aspects. As AI becomes more integrated into everyday technology, understanding its role in meeting human needs is vital for developing effective and responsible systems. This conference fosters collaboration among experts from diverse fields to tackle significant issues in AI and HCI through discussions, workshops, and networking sessions. UI 2026 attracted a record number of submissions for the main conference (561 full paper submissions after an initial submission of 697 abstracts). Posters Posters provide an opportunity for sharing valuable last-minute ideas, eliciting useful feedback on early-stage work and fostering discussions and collaborations among colleagues. We invite submissions relevant to all conference topics. All submissions should convey a scientific result or work in progress that is not yet ready to be published as a full-length research paper at a refereed conference. The page limit for poster papers is 4 pages (references do not count toward the page limit). Submitting a draft poster along with your submission is not required, but is recommended. Accepted poster papers will appear in the companion proceedings of the conference. Each accepted contribution is expected to be presented in person during the poster session. Demos The demonstration track complements the overall program of the conference. Demonstrations show implementations of novel, interesting, and important intelligent user interface concepts or systems. We invite submissions relevant to intelligent user interfaces and which address, but are not limited to, the topics of the conference. All submissions are intended to convey a scientific result or work in progress and should not be advertisements for commercial software packages. The page limit for demo papers is 4 pages (references do not count toward the page limit). Authors further need to submit a video (max. 5 mins) along with their demo paper to showcase their work. Usage of Generative AI All submissions must comply with the ACM policy on the usage of GenAI: the April 2023 ACM Policy on Authorship and Frequently Asked Questions. Text generated from a large-scale language model (LLM), such as ChatGPT, must be clearly marked where such tools are used for purposes beyond editing the author’s own text. Authors should include a “GenAI Usage Disclosure” section, right before the references, to provide full disclosure of all use of GenAI tools in all stages of the research (including the code and data) and the writing. This section, together with the references, will not be counted toward the word limit. While we do not anticipate using tools on a large scale to detect LLM-generated text, we will investigate submissions brought to our attention and desk reject papers where LLM use is not clearly marked. Next webinar: Speaker: Goran Glavaš (Universität Würzburg) Title: Improving Multilingual Abilities of (Different Types of) Language Models Date: Thursday, December 4, 2025 - 15:00 CET Summary: Language models tend to excel in languages they see the most during (pre)training—leaving low-resource languages at a stark disadvantage. But what if we could boost performance without throwing (much) more data or compute at the problem? In this talk, I’ll present a set of resource-lean (read: “cheap”) strategies that enhance multilingual language understanding and generation in low-resource settings. I’ll show how conceptually effective knowledge transfer techniques—not just bigger models—can improve multilingual capabilities across three major fronts: (1) standard text-based LLMs, (2) vision-language models, and (3) code language models. The takeaway? Scaling isn’t the only answer: for truly inclusive multilingual language technology, we need stronger inductive biases and more conceptual innovation. Bio: Goran Glavaš is a Full Professor for Natural Language Processing at the University of Würzburg (Germany), Center for AI and Data Science (CAIDAS). His research focuses on multilingual language understanding and cross-lingual transfer, vision-and-language models, and trustworthiness of (multilingual) language models. He has (co-)authored over 120 publications in NLP and IR, regularly publishing at top-tier venues (ACL, EMNLP, NAACL, EACL, TACL, SIGIR, ECIR). He received the best long paper award at EACL 2021 and outstanding paper awards at EACL 2024 and ACL 2024. He served as an Editor-in-Chief of the ACL Rolling Review (ARR) and regularly serves as (Senior) Area Chair for top-tier NLP conferences.
