Workplace
Computational Analysis of Semantic Change Across Different Environments
(CASCADE) is a HORIZON Marie
Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) Doctoral Networks scheme which will bring
together researchers from a variety
of backgrounds, including literary studies, historical text analysis,
semantics, corpus linguistics, machine learning
and natural language processing. The project will emphasise the importance
of computational linguistics and
humanities scholarship as skills that bring value and competitive edge to
organisations concerned with semantically
aware information retrieval and text analytics. CASCADE is a partnership
between University College Cork, the
University of Sheffield, KU Leuven, the University of Helsinki, and Saarland
University.
Location
This position is to be filled at Saarland University, seeking applications
for a PhD project entitled Diachronic development of text
types in the English Language, which will be one of ten funded projects to
emerge out of CASCADE's doctoral
network. The successful candidate will be appointed as Marie Curie Early
Career Researchers at Saarland University,
enrolled in a fully-funded three-year PhD programme.
The successful candidate will be supervised by PD Dr. Stefania
Degaetano-Ortlieb. The position will be located
within the Department of Language Science and Technology. The successful
applicant will have the opportunity to
collaborate with researchers affiliated with the DFG-funded Collaborative
Research Center (CRC) 1102 on
Information Density and Linguistic Encoding at Saarland University. CRC 1102

research groups in the fields of Computational Linguistics,
Psycholinguistics, Speech Processing, and Corpus
Linguistics. It is part of Saarland Informatics Campus, which brings
together computer science research at the
university with world-class research institutions on campus.
Project description
The project Diachronic development of text types in the English Language
will use computational approaches to model
temporal dynamics of textual data (corpus-based and novel probabilistic
measures) for the analysis of the
development of text types in English. From the 15th century onward,
increased use of the vernacular and perceived
syntactic and lexical gaps (compared with Latin) prompted linguistic
innovation in English, concurrent with the
progressive conventionalization of text types. Existing variation was made
functional and new distinctions were either
borrowed or invented (e.g. transfer of features from medicine to cooking
recipes). Applying corpus-based and novel
probabilistic measures to investigate diachronic change and with support
from Text+ and IDeaL, the PhD candidate
will be able to: 1) determine the linguistic features of different text
types; 2) determine how these features change
over time; 3) assess the overlap of different text types and the possible
mutual influence of text types; 4) develop a
computational workflow to support the above objectives which is made
publicly available (e.g. on github).
Eligibility: This is important!
The vacancy is open to applicants of all nationalities who comply with the
mobility requirement and the degree
requirement:
* applicants must not have resided in the country of the CASCADE
university that will host them (university of the main supervisor, Germany
in this case) for more than 12 months in the 36 months preceding appointment

*Postdoctoral Researcher, STEMMA: Systems of Transmitting Early Modern
Manuscript Verse, 1475–1700*
School of English, Media, and Creative Arts, University of Galway
Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a
full-time, fixed-term position as a Postdoctoral Researcher for the project
‘STEMMA: Systems of Transmitting Early Modern Manuscript Verse, 1475–1700’,
led by Professor Erin A. McCarthy
<https://www.universityofgalway.ie/colleges-and-schools/arts-social-sciences…>,
School of English and Creative Arts at the University of Galway, Ireland.
The position is funded by a European Research Council Consolidator Grant
awarded to Professor McCarthy.
This position is funded by a European Research Council Consolidator Grant
awarded to Professor McCarthy and is available for thirty-six months from 1
July 2024.
*Project Description*
This project develops and applies a data-driven approach in order to
provide the first macro-level view of the circulation of early modern
English poetry in manuscript. It focuses on English verse manuscripts
written and used between the introduction of printing in England in 1475
and 1700, by which time the rapid changes in both literary taste and
publishing norms ushered in by the Restoration had fully transformed
literary culture. The project includes manuscripts circulating in England
and anywhere else English was spoken and read, including Ireland, the North
American colonies, and continental exile communities. It develops
innovative computational models and quantitative methods for studying the
social and material forces that informed literary culture.
Whereas the current state of the art has seen the scholarly community
address manuscripts primarily as case studies, STEMMA seeks to open new
frontiers in manuscript research by facilitating the identification of
patterns and trends at scale. To that end, the project begins by
synthesizing six of the most comprehensive datasets about early modern
English manuscripts in preparation for advanced literary, material, and
quantitative analyses. This first work package sets the stage for four
further, interlocking work packages, to which the doctoral and postdoctoral
positions are allocated: networking early modern manuscript poems; early
modern literary communities in the English-speaking world; rolling
archetypes, computational text analysis, and scholarly editing; and textual
circulation between manuscript and print. The research team will comprise
the PI, three postdoctoral researchers, and one PhD student with expertise
in literary history, textual studies, computational text analysis, and
social network analysis. They will be based in the Moore Institute for
Research in the Humanities and Social Studies, located in the Hardiman
Research Building.
*Job Description:*The successful candidate will focus on Work Package 4,
‘Rolling Archetypes, Computational Text Analysis, and Scholarly Editing’.
This work package will test methods from textual editing and stylometry to
assess their usefulness for identifying poets and/or scribes. The first
several months of the contract will focus primarily on data preparation and
reconciliation. The researcher will then identify one or more previously
unidentified textual ‘clusters’ and prepare a full-text corpus. The
researcher will apply computational text analysis methods to investigate
how compilers worked with rolling archetypes and how these insights might
inform contemporary textual editing practice. The researcher will also
contribute to the organization of a major international hackathon and
conference and the communication of project results through peer-reviewed
outputs and public outreach activities.
Duties:
· Preparation of data for online virtual research environment
· Analysing data and results
· Computational text analysis
· Archival research on major collections of manuscript miscellanies held in
libraries internationally
· Preparation of papers for presentation and publication
· Contribution to the project website and social media channels
· Associated administrative duties
· Any other duties assigned commensurate to this level of post.
*Qualifications/Skills required:*
Essential Requirements:
· PhD in English literature, digital humanities, or another relevant field
· Significant experience in computational text analysis and/or stylometry
· Experience working with databases
· Excellent writing and communication skills
· Peer-reviewed publication record
· Ability to work well both collaboratively and independently
· Highly motivated, with excellent organisational skills
Desirable Requirements:
· Expertise in early modern manuscript culture and/or early modern English
poetry
· Experience with textual editing
· Experience with network analysis
· Knowledge of one or more of the following languages: French, German,
Italian, Latin, Spanish
· Excellent IT skills
Salary: Postdoctoral Researcher pay scale €42,782 - €54,965 per annum,
(subject to the project’s funding limitations), and pro rata for shorter
and/or part-time contracts.
The default position for all new public sector appointments is the 1st
point of the salary scale. This may be reviewed, and consideration afforded
to appointment at a higher point on the payscale, where evidence of prior
years’ equivalent experience is accepted in determining placement on the
scale above point 1, subject to the maximum of the scale.
Research Salary Scales - University of Galway).
Start date: Position is available from 1 July 2024. Information on how to
apply is available at

Langues et langage à la croisée des disciplines ( LLcD ) is a new research network, supported by the French CNRS. It organizes an international conference in France aiming to advance the scientific understanding of human language and linguistic systems, as well as to foster new collaborations and cross-fertilization among different research areas and approaches.
The LLcD Meeting, slated to occur annually, will change its location and its thematic focus every year. It will be organized around a conference, as well as a panel discussion and a summer school, both within the theme promoted that year. The LLcD conference will feature plenary lectures delivered by invited keynote speakers, a general session and thematic workshops.
The first edition of the conference is scheduled to take place at Sorbonne University, Paris, from September 9th to September 11th, 2024 . Its main theme will be: Languages, variations, changes: synchronic, diachronic, typological and comparative approaches.
We invite papers on all sub-fields of linguistics, languages, approaches (descriptive, theoretical, empirical, interdisciplinary, etc.), in order to promote diversity across disciplines and methodologies. The proposals are not required to address the main theme of the conference. The languages of the conference are English and French. Abstracts may be submitted for thematic workshops or the general session, no later than April 20, 2024 , on EasyChair .
[ https://llcd2024.sciencesconf.org/resource/page/id/18 | List of workshops ]

The “test suites” sub-task will be included for the sixth time in the
General MT Shared Task of the Conference on Machine Translation (WMT24).
*OVERVIEW*
Test suites are custom extensions to the test sets of the General MT
Shared Task, constructed so that they can focus on concrete aspects of
the MT output. They consist of a source-side test-set and a customized
evaluation service. As opposed to the standard evaluation process which
produces generic quality scores, test suites often produce separate
fine-grained results for each phenomenon.
Since the usage of LLMs for translation is getting more popular, and we
are expecting more LLMs participations in WMT this year, the theme of
this year’s test suite sub-task is "Help us break LLMs", i.e. to reveal
weaknesses and serious flaws of LLMs when translating, hidden within the
overall high-quality generation.
*IMPORTANT DATES*
* 11th April: Test suite source texts may be submitted for a pre-run
on SoTA MT systems
* 12th June: Test suite source texts must reach us
* 11th July: Translated test suites shipped back to test suites authors:
* TBC - August: Test suite description and analysis paper
* 12th-13th November: Conference

Special Issue on “Large Language Models and Data Quality for Knowledge
Graphs”
In recent years, Knowledge Graphs (KGs), encompassing millions of
relational facts, have emerged as central assets to support virtual
assistants and search and recommendations on the web. Moreover, KGs are
increasingly used by large companies and organizations to organize and
comprehend their data, with industry-scale KGs fusing data from various
sources for downstream applications. Building KGs involves data management
and artificial intelligence areas, such as data integration, cleaning,
named entity recognition and disambiguation, relation extraction, and
active learning.
However, the methods used to build these KGs involve automated components
that could be better, resulting in KGs with high sparsity and incorporating
several inaccuracies and wrong facts. As a result, evaluating the KG
quality plays a significant role, as it serves multiple purposes – e.g.,
gaining insights into the quality of data, triggering the refinement of the
KG construction process, and providing valuable information to downstream
applications. In this regard, the information in the KG must be correct to
ensure an engaging user experience for entity-oriented services like
virtual assistants. Despite its importance, there is little research on
data quality and evaluation for KGs at scale.
In this context, the rise of Large Language Models (LLMs) opens up
unprecedented opportunities – and challenges – to advance KG construction
and evaluation, providing an intriguing intersection between human and
machine capabilities. On the one hand, integrating LLMs within KG
construction systems could trigger the development of more context-aware
and adaptive AI systems. At the same time, however, LLMs are known to
hallucinate and can thus generate mis/disinformation, which can affect the
quality of the resulting KG. In this sense, reliability and credibility
components are of paramount importance to manage the hallucinations
produced by LLMs and avoid polluting the KG. On the other hand,
investigating how to combine LLMs and quality evaluation has excellent
potential, as shown by promising results from using LLMs to generate
relevance judgments in information retrieval.
Thus, this special issue promotes novel research on human-machine
collaboration for KG construction and evaluation, fostering the
intersection between KGs and LLMs. To this end, we encourage submissions
related to using LLMs within KG construction systems, evaluating KG
quality, and applying quality control systems to empower KG and LLM
