First Workshop on Patient-Oriented Language Processing (CL4HEALTH) @ LREC-COLING 2024 https://bionlp.nlm.nih.gov/cl4health2024/ Torino, Italy (co-located with LREC-COLING 2024) May 20, 2024 SCOPE This first workshop on patient-oriented language processing aims to establish a general venue for presenting research and applications focused on patients’ needs, including summarizing health records for the patients, answering consumer-health questions using reliable resources, detecting misinformation or potentially harmful information, and providing multi-modal information, such as video, if it better satisfies patients’ needs. Such a venue is needed both to invigorate patient-oriented language processing research and to build a community of researchers interested in this area. The growing interest in this topic is fueled by several current trends: - a proliferation of online services that target patients but do not always act in their best interests - policy changes that allow patients to access their health records written in the professional vernacular, which may confuse the patients or lead to misinterpretation; - replacement of customer services with chat bots; and - the increasing tendency of patients to consult online resources as a second or even first opinion on their health problems. We invite papers concerning all areas of language processing focused on patients’ health. The workshop will be centered on language technologies for health-related issues concerning the public that include, but are not limited to: - accessibility and trustworthiness of health information provided to the public - explainable and evidence-supported answers to consumer-health questions - accurate summarization of patients’ health records at their health-literacy level - understanding patients' non-informational needs through their language, and accurate and accessible interpretations of biomedical research Broadly, CL4Health is concerned with the resources, computational approaches, and behavioral and socio-economic aspects of the public interactions with digital resources in search of health-related information that satisfies their information needs and guides their actions. The topics of interest for the workshop include but are not limited to the following: - Health-related information needs and online behaviors of the public - Quality assurance and ethics considerations in language technologies and approaches applied to text and other modalities for public consumption - Summarization of EHR data for patients - Detection of misinformation in health-related resources and mitigation of potential harms - Consumer-health question answering - Biomedical text simplification/adaptation - Dialogue systems to support patients’ interactions with clinicians, healthcare systems, and online resources - Linguistic resources, data and tools for language technologies focusing on consumer health - Resources, strategies and metrics for system testing and evaluation - Infrastructures and pre-trained language models for consumer health - Processing and annotation platforms - Synthetic data generation and data augmentation. Call for Papers: 7th Laughter and Other Non-Verbal Vocalisations Workshop - July 16-17 2024 We are excited to announce the 7th Laughter and Other Non-Verbal Vocalisations Workshop (bit.ly/LaughterWorkshop2024) on July 16-17 at Queen’s University Belfast. The workshop will be a pre-conference event, part of the 2024 Conference of the International Society for Research on Emotion (www.isre2024.org). Non-verbal vocalisations in human-human and human-machine interactions play important roles in displaying social and affective behaviours and in managing the flow of interaction. Laughter, sighs, clicks, filled pauses, and short utterances such as feedback responses are among some of the non-verbal vocalisations that are being increasingly studied from various research fields. However, much is still unknown about the phonetic or visual characteristics of non-verbal vocalisations (production/encoding), their relations to the social actions they are part of, their perceived meanings (perception/decoding), and their ordering in interaction. Furthermore, with the increased interest for more naturalness in human-machine interaction, current times also invite exploring how these phenomena can be integrated in speech applications. Research themesinclude, but are not restricted to, these aspects of laughter and other non-verbal vocalisations: * Articulation, acoustics, and perception * Interaction and pragmatics * Affective and evaluative meanings * Social perception and organisation * Disfluency * Technology applications Researchers are invited to submit extended abstracts(2 pages long, including figures and references) describing their work, including work in progress. Processing of figurative language is a rapidly growing area in NLP, including computational modeling of metaphors, idioms, puns, irony, sarcasm, simile, and other figures. Characteristic to all areas of human activity (from poetic, ordinary, scientific, social media) and, thus, to all types of discourse, figurative language becomes an important problem for NLP systems. Its ubiquity in language has been established in a number of corpus studies and the role it plays in human reasoning has been confirmed in psychological experiments. This makes figurative language an important research area for computational and cognitive linguistics, and its automatic identification, interpretation and generation indispensable for any semantics-oriented NLP application. The proposed workshop will be the fourth edition of the biennial Workshop on Figurative Language Processing, whose first editions were held at NAACL 2018, ACL 2020 and EMNLP 2022, respectively. The workshop builds upon a long series of related workshops that the current organizers have been involved with: “Metaphor in NLP” series (2013-2016) and “Computational Approaches to Linguistic Creativity” series (2009-2010). We expand the scope to incorporate various types of figurative language, with the aim of maintaining and nourishing a community of NLP researchers interested in this topic. The main focus will be on computational modeling of figurative language, however papers on cognitive, linguistic, social, rhetorical, and applied aspects are also of interest, provided that they are presented within a computational, formal, or a quantitative framework. Recent advancement in language models have led to several works on figurative language understanding (Chakrabarty et al 2022a; Chakrabarty et al 2022b; Liu et al 2022; Hu et al 2023) and generation (Stowe et al 2021; Chakrabarty et al 2021; Sun et al 2022; Tian et al 2021) At the same time large language models have opened up opportunities to utilize figurative language in scientific (Kim et al 2023) as well as creative writing (Chakrabarty et al 2022c; Tian et al 2022). Additionally there have also been recent work on multimodal figurative language generation (Chakrabarty et al 2023; Akula et al 2023), understanding (Hessel et al 2023; Yosef et al 2023) and interpretation (Hwang et al 2023; Desai et al 2022; Kumar et al 2022). We encourage submissions along these axes. Topics of Interest The workshop will solicit both full papers and short papers for either oral or poster presentation. Topics will include, but will not be limited to, the following: Identification and interpretation of different types of figurative language: Linguistic, conceptual and extended metaphor; irony, sarcasm, puns, simile, metonymy, personification, synecdoche, hyperbole Generation of different types of figurative language: sarcasm, simile, metaphors, humor, hyperbole Multilingual and multimodal figurative language processing Resources and evaluation Annotation of figurative language in corpora Datasets for evaluation of tools Evaluation methodologies Figurative use in low-resource languages Processing of figurative language for NLP applications Figurative language in sentiment analysis; dialogue systems; computational social science; educational applications Figurative language and mental health Figurative language in digital humanities Figurative language in creative writing Figurative language and cognition Cognitive models of processing of figurative language by the human brain Human-AI collaboration for figurative language Shared Tasks Multilingual euphemisms detection: Euphemisms are a linguistic device used to soften or neutralize language that may otherwise be harsh or awkward to state directly (e.g. "between jobs" instead of "unemployed", "late" instead of "dead", "collateral damage" instead of "war-related civilian deaths"). By acting as alternative words or phrases, euphemisms are used in everyday language to maintain politeness, mitigate discomfort, or conceal the truth. While they are culturally-dependent, the need to discuss sensitive topics in a non-offensive way is universal, suggesting similarities in the way euphemisms are used across languages and cultures. We propose a shared task in which participants will need to disambiguate sentences in multiple languages as either euphemistic or not. The dataset will include English, Mandarin, Spanish, Yoruba, and possibly additional languages. Understanding of Figurative Language through Visual Entailment: One important modality that has gained interest recently is vision, namely the interpretation of figurative language in media such as memes, art, or comics. This task is challenging because it involves reasoning abstractly about images, and also involves understanding social commonsense and cultural context. We will frame this as a visual entailment task where a model not only has to predict if a caption entails the content in the image but also provide free text explanations justifying the label prediction. These tasks have proved difficult for state-of-the-art multimodal models in the past. We will have a paper and a baseline for the same. We are interested in the use of NLP to measure the development of social understanding in adolescents. The Research Fellow will develop and test an automated scoring procedure to quantify open-ended text-based responses to psychometric tests of social understanding. Our workshop will serve as a platform to enable fruitful discussions. In 2024, we additionally focus on bridging the gap between cross-linguistic and universal annotation, models, and technology. SIGTYP is the first dedicated venue for typology-related research and its integration in multilingual NLP. Appropriate topics include (but are not limited to) the following as they relate to the areas of the workshop: * Integration of typological features in language transfer and joint multilingual learning. In addition to established techniques such as “selective sharing”, are there alternative ways to encoding heterogeneous external knowledge in machine learning algorithms? * Development of unified taxonomy and resources. Building universal databases and models to facilitate understanding and processing of diverse languages. * Automatic inference of typological features. The pros and cons of existing techniques (e.g. heuristics derived from morphosyntactic annotation, propagation from features of other languages, supervised Bayesian and neural models) and discussion on emerging ones. * Typology and interpretability. The use of typological knowledge for interpretation of hidden representations of multilingual neural models, multilingual data generation and selection, and typological annotation of texts. * Improvement and completion of typological databases. Combining linguistic knowledge and automatic data-driven methods towards the joint goal of improving the knowledge on cross-linguistic variation and universals. * Linguistic diversity and universals. Challenges of cross-lingual annotation. Which linguistic phenomena or categories should be considered universal? How should they be annotated? * Language-specific studies to support or contradict universals. Framing a study on 1-3 languages that would shed more light on common linguistic structures and properties. * Extra topics also include: generation of constructed languages, universals in diachronic languages changes, information-theoretic approaches to typology, automated approaches to etymology.
