This shared task is on perceived emotion and focuses on: - Determining what emotion most people will think the speaker may be feeling given a sentence or short text snippet uttered by the speaker. The task is *not about*: - The emotion evoked in the reader. - The emotion of someone else mentioned in the text. - Or even the true emotion of the speaker (which cannot be definitively known from just a short text snippet). We acknowledge the importance of this distinction as perceived emotions can differ from actual emotions due to various factors such as cultural context, individual differences in emotional expression, and the limitations of text-based communication. Participants can participate in one or more of the following tracks: Track A: Multi-label Emotion Detection Given a target text snippet, predict the perceived emotion(s) of the speaker. A training dataset with gold emotion labels will be provided for this track. Dear all, I'm looking to recruit a post-doctoral researcher in computer science or digital humanities to my ERC-funded project, which started in May 2024: https://www.helsinki.fi/en/researchgroups/multimodality/a-foundation-for-em… The project develops novel methods and resources for studying multimodality, or how human communication naturally combines multiple 'modes' of expression. These methods and resources are used to develop empirically founded theories of multimodal communication in the domain of everyday cultural artefacts. The data studied in the project includes, for example, school textbooks, user-generated explanation videos on social media, news broadcasts, instruction manuals and online newspapers. This is a fixed-term position for 48 months, starting in January 2025 or as agreed, based in the Department of Languages at the University of Helsinki, Finland. The deadline for applications is October 21, 2024. RESPONSIBILITIES: The post-doctoral researcher is responsible for developing new methods for querying the multimodal corpora created in the project, which describe the structure of multimodal discourse using graphs that combine crowdsourced human insights and vector representations. The Institute for Translation and Interpreting at the University of Heidelberg offers the position of professor of translation studies with a focus on translation processes and translation workflow. We are seeking candidates with a first independent research profile after the doctorate for the tenure track level (W1). This position will initially be limited to six years and, following a positive tenure evaluation, will be converted to a permanent W3 full professorship. Candidates that are more qualified may be appointed directly on the full professor level. Call for submissions: Conference on Rational Approaches in Language Science (RAILS) The 2nd Conference on Rational Approaches in Language Science (RAILS) will be held in Saarbruecken, Germany, 13-15 February 2025. The central theme of this conference is rational communication, i.e. the idea that language users continuously strive to optimize their means of communication to effectively convey their intended messages. RAILS brings together research on (1) how interlocutors process and update information in diverse situational contexts, (2) how language use is adapted to certain contexts and intended referents, and (3) how linguistic and conceptual information is stored and maintained in short- and long-term memory. We invite submissions from researchers across the language sciences – including speech science, theoretical linguistics, empirical linguistics, psycholinguistics and neuroscience, computational linguistics, as well as language development, change and evolution – who apply rational probabilistic explanations to linguistic phenomena, or bring novel experimental findings to bear on such accounts. It is structured around 4 Working Groups: - WG1: Corpus annotation - WG2: Lexicon-corpus interface - WG3: Multilingual and cross-lingual language technology - WG4: Quantifying and promoting diversity The *third general meeting <https://unidive.lisn.upsaclay.fr/doku.php?id=meetings:general_meetings:2rd_…>* of the action will take place on January 29-30 and will be preceded by a WG2 meeting on 28 January 2025 at the HUN-REN Hungarian Research Centre for Linguistics in Budapest. We invite UniDive WG members to submit abstract proposals related to the scientific program of the WGs. The main venues will be in *Benczúr Hotel <https://www.hotelbenczur.hu/>*, Budapest, but some sessions will take place at the *Hungarian Research Centre for Linguistics <https://nytud.hu/en%7CHUN-REN>*, Budapest, Hungary. Proposals may describe diverse types of contributions, according to 3 different tracks: - Planned work - Work in progress - Complete work, also previously published A proposal should be anonymous, written in English and submitted in pdf only. It should include (on the title page) the list of the relevant WGs. It should not exceed 2 pages, including figures and tables (bibliographic references may go beyond the 2-page limit). If linguistic examples from languages other than English are included, those should be glossed and translated into English, and an extra half page is allowed for this purpose. For the sake of uniformity and easing the reviewers’ effort, we encourage authors to use the *Overleaf Latex template <https://www.overleaf.com/read/yqbpxcbjmjjw>*. Other formats (not necessarily Latex-based) can also be used, provided that they conform to the following specifications: A4 paper, 11pt font, 1in margins. The selection of proposals will be done by UniDive Program Committee according to the following criteria: - relevance to UniDive and the work program of its Working Groups (see pp. 18-20 of the Memorandum of Understanding), - clarity - diversity of the languages covered by the workshop program The selected proposals will be presented at the 3rd UniDive general meeting as posters and/or oral presentations. At least one author per selected proposal will be reimbursed for their travel and stay. The ALTA 2024 workshop is the key local forum for socialising research results in Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Computational Linguistics (CL). It will feature presentations, posters, and demonstrations from students, industry, and academic researchers. Like previous years, we also encourage submissions and participation from industry and government researchers and developers.
