on Data Contamination (CONDA) co-located with ACL 2024 in Bangkok, Thailand.
Data contamination, where evaluation data is inadvertently included in
pre-training corpora of large scale models, and language models (LMs) in
particular, has become a concern in recent times. The growing scale of
both models and data, coupled with massive web crawling, has led to the
inclusion of segments from evaluation benchmarks in the pre-training
data of LMs. The scale of internet data makes it difficult to prevent
this contamination from happening, or even detect when it has happened.
Crucially, when evaluation data becomes part of pre-training data, it
introduces biases and can artificially inflate the performance of LMs on
specific tasks or benchmarks. This poses a challenge for fair and
unbiased evaluation of models, as their performance may not accurately
reflect their generalization capabilities.
Although a growing number of papers and state-of-the-art models mention
issues of data contamination, there is no agreed-upon definition or
standard methodology to ensure that a model does not report results on
contaminated benchmarks. Addressing data contamination is a shared
responsibility among researchers, developers, and the broader community.
By adopting best practices, increasing transparency, documenting
vulnerabilities, and conducting thorough evaluations, we can work
towards minimizing the impact of data contamination and ensuring fair
and reliable evaluations.

METAPOL3: DISCOURSE, IDEOLOGIES AND SUB-STATE NATIONALISM
21-22 November 2024, University of Liège, Belgium
Despite attempts to discourage sub-state nationalism and keep the political map of the world in its present form, the struggle for separate identities still remains a serious issue in modern-day countries. Sub-state nationalism has led to violent conflicts in postcolonial Africa, the former Yugoslavia and Soviet Union, and has been one of the main causes of political upheaval in Belgium, Britain, Spain, China, etc.
As Anderson (1983) indicates, nations are imagined communities whose formation involves the spread of discourses aimed at establishing a clear difference between in-groups and out-groups. While national identity has attracted a fair amount of scholarly interest in the field of political science, it is only in the early 90s that studies emphasizing the discursive manifestations of nationalism started being conducted (Wodak & Matouschek, 1993; Wodak & Reisigl, 1999; Wodak et al. 1999).
These last two decades, the study of political discourse has been consolidated by metaphor analysis (Musolff, 2006; 2016; Saric & Stanojevic, 2019), and even though great strides have indeed been made in political discourse analysis, research on sub-state nationalism remains scant. It is thus in an attempt to fill this gap that we are organizing this conference which will hopefully bring together researchers from different fields (linguistics, sociology, political science, cognitive science), interested in discourse, metaphor and nationalist ideologies.

The two major conferences in the Baltic and Nordic regions, NoDaLida, organized by The Northern European Association for Language Technology (NEALT) and Baltic HLT are joining forces to organize NoDaLiDa/Baltic-HLT 2025 – The Joint 25th Nordic Conference on Computational Linguistics and 11th Baltic Conference on Human Language Technologies, to be held in Tallinn, Estonia, on March 2–5, 2025.
We would like to invite proposals for workshops, to be held on Sunday, March 2, immediately before the main conference, or on Wednesday, March 5, immediately after the main conference. Workshops can be scheduled either for a full day (morning and afternoon) or for half a day. The main conference will be held on-site only, without an online option, in order to facilitate networking. Three kinds of papers can be submitted:
• Long papers are most appropriate for presenting substantial research results and must not exceed eight (8) pages of content, plus unlimited pages of ethical considerations, supplementary material statements, and references. The supplementary material statement provides detailed descriptions to support the reproduction of the results presented in the paper (see below for details). The final versions of long papers will be given one additional page of content (up to 9 pages) so that reviewers' comments can be taken into account.
• Short papers are more appropriate for presenting an ongoing research effort and must not exceed four (4) pages, plus unlimited pages of ethical considerations, supplementary material statements, and references. The final versions of short papers will be given one additional page of content (up to 5 pages) so that reviewers' comments can be taken into account.
• Demo papers should be no more than two (2) pages, including references, and should describe implemented systems relevant to the NLG community. The position is part of the project LitAttention – What Short Fiction Knows About Attention and Attention Politics, funded by the European Research Council (ERC). LitAttention combines approaches from cognitive literary studies, computational linguistics/digital humanities, and educational psychology to investigate ‘literary attention’. The project will (a) examine the connection between developments in short fiction and changing theories of attention; (b) explore literary techniques and linguistic devices that guide readers’ attention; (c) assess the value of short fiction today, especially for education, and (d) develop methodological and conceptual frameworks for examining literary attention.
LitAttention is based at the Department of English Literatures and Cultures at the University of Stuttgart and integrated into a strong interdisciplinary community, including the Stuttgart Research Centre for Text Studies (SRCTS), the Institute for Natural Language Processing (IMS), and the Center for Reflected Text Analytics (CRETA).
Your tasks
The successful candidate will contribute to the identification of text properties that elicit attention. They will be responsible for developing and applying computational models that help identify and explain patterns of attention (and distraction) in short fiction. As part of the LitAttention team, they will be involved in the organisation of project events, public outreach activities, presentations at international conferences, and project publications.
Required qualifications
• PhD in Computational Literary Studies, Digital Humanities, Computational Linguistics, or an adjacent field, and willingness to engage in interdisciplinary research

Using machine learning to automatically read cancer research papers to help
catalogue the meaning of different cancer mutations and how they may affect
patients’ treatments
Slightly longer description about the project
Modern DNA sequencing technologies enable us to probe the genetics of
individual cancers. Each cancer is unique and can have a multitude of
mutations. However, understanding the importance and impact of each of
those mutations is hugely challenging and relies heavily on searching the
research literature. The CIViC database, managed by the Griffith Lab at
Washington University at St Louis, collates this knowledge on cancer
mutations from research papers for fast searching by clinicians and
researchers worldwide. However, keeping it up to date involves a lot of
human effort to read the latest research. The collaboration with Glasgow
will enable the latest innovations in language technologies to be applied
to automatically process research papers and flag relevant research useful
for the CIViC database. This will involve development of all kinds of
information extraction techniques. No background knowledge of
biology/medicine is needed.

The Third Workshop on Language Technologies for Historical and Ancient LAnguages (LT4HALA 2024) will be held on May 25th in Torino (Italy), co-located with LREC-COLING 2024.
This one-day hybrid workshop brings together scholars who are developing and/or are using Language Technologies for historically attested languages, so to foster cross-fertilization between the Computational Linguistics community and the areas in the Humanities dealing with historical linguistic data, e.g. history, philology, linguistics, archaeology and literature.

NTCIR-18 (June 10-13, 2025, Tokyo, Japan) now calls for task participation
of anyone interested in research on information access technologies and
their evaluation, such as retrieval from a large amount of document
collections, question answering and natural language processing. We welcome
students, young researchers, professors who supervise students, researchers
working for a company, and anyone who is interested in informatics.
== What is NTCIR? ==
Development of Information Access technologies based on techniques of
Information Retrieval, Natural Language Processing, and Database Management
becomes increasingly more important for many applications, (e.g., providing
effective access to Web resources and text archives, and analyzing big data
obtained from various kinds of sensors). It is indispensable for developing
such technologies to experimentally evaluate them by using test collections
constructed under collaborations of many researchers. Over the past 20
years, NTCIR has been formulating the infrastructure for the evaluation,
and contributing to development of the Information Access technologies. A
total of over 80 “evaluation tasks” have been organized, attracting over
1,000 participant research groups worldwide so far. Furthermore, over 4,600
research groups have signed up to use the NTCIR test collections in their
research. Consequently, NTCIR has been a major forum for researchers to
intensively discuss the evaluation methodology of emerging information
access technologies.
