Dear colleagues,
The Intelligent Next Generation Networking and Multimedia (IN2GM) Lab at Concordia University is delighted to announce the availability of a few funded Ph.D. and Master positions in the exciting research areas of networking, multimedia systems, and next-generation network systems and applications. We are seeking highly motivated candidates with a strong interest in networking and media delivery protocols, immersive media, next-generation wireless/mobile networks (5G and beyond), and AI/ML for networking, edge AI and media delivery optimization.
Starting Date: Fall 2023 or shortly thereafter (e.g., Winter 2024).
Duration: 3-4 years for a Ph.D. degree and 2 years for a Master's degree, with the possibility of extension based on performance.
Location: Concordia University, Montreal, Canada.
Job Description:
As part of an R&D collaboration between Concordia University's IN2GM Lab and industry partners, this project offers an exceptional opportunity to conduct cutting-edge research, develop innovative paradigms, prototype tools, and evaluate results. The focus is on building systems that support the delivery of immersive media over 5G networks.
The primary objective of this research is to design an end-to-end AI-enabled immersive media transport system. This encompasses various aspects, including media encoding, media packaging, media ingesting, media delivery over the core and last-mile networks, and media consumption on the client side. The system must adhere to the standards set by IETF, MPEG, and 3GPP. The intended applications of this research include virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), XR (extended reality), and the metaverse.
The program offers a competitive salary, and successful Ph.D. and Master students will have the privilege of being supervised by Professor Abdelhak Bentaleb, the esteemed head of the IN2GM Lab. Upon completion, students will be awarded a doctorate degree (for Ph.D. positions) or Master (for Master positions) in Computer Science from Concordia University's Department of Computer Science and Software Engineering, which is part of the Gina Cody School of Engineering and Computer Science.
Qualifications:
Candidates must have completed a master's degree (for Ph.D. positions) and a BSc degree (for Master'spositions) in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Communications, or a related discipline, or be nearing completion at the start date of the appointment. Additionally, successful candidates should possess:
Excellent background in networking, multimedia systems, and mathematics. Having a background in immersive media, video streaming protocols/formats, wireless 5G networks, and machine/deep learning (e.g., deep reinforcement learning) is a plus.
Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, PyTorch, JavaScript, C, and C++.
Good English skills, both written and verbal.
